It's interesting that there's threads on both the 480 Rugers and Ruger FT 44 Specials right now.
My favorite 480 Ruger is a JRH Custom on a Ruger Bisley Midframe Flattop.

What was I thinking when I sold mine? That is definitely a very fine looking revolver. For me, I think the 480's performance band is near ideal. The 4-5/8" Bisley and the Super Redhawk Alaskan seem to make for pretty handy companion revolvers.

Wait a couple of years, until all the .480 owners that actually shoot their guns are complaining about Starline not running brass since 2024, and the used guns are back on the market. Starline still has .475 Linebaugh brass, about 56 cents each for 500 if I recall. You can also get 250 count and 1,000 count, if that helps anybody. I presume it would be just as easy to cut down 45-70 brass to .480 Ruger as it would be to cut down 475 L. On the other hand, maybe there are some shooters using .475L that were not aware of Starline having brass for it now. OK, did some more research and Starline Brass (starlinebrass.com) has the following: 475 Linebaugh: 250 count for $159.50 (64 cents ea) In Stock 500 count for. $280.50 (56 cent ea) In Stock 1000 count for $537.00 (54 cent ea). In Stock 45-70 brass: OUT OF STOCK NO BACKORDERS.

I'm not familiar with all the details, but making either .480 or .475 from .45-70 isn't that simple, depending on your particular gun(s). I'm told that anything other than Winchester .45-70 brass will require inside reaming, and the rim on all brands may require to be turned down. Midway still has Starline .480 brass in stock - $61.99 for 100 pieces. And there's probably some on GunBroker for a bit more than that.

Grafs has 480 Ruger Brass as well. I'm not really understanding the chatter about forming brass from any of the parent cases...

Yup, I tried a few brands of 45-70 brass in my 5 shot Blackhawk and Super Redhawk. As long as .480 is available I'd get them, failing that trimming the .475's is an easier route than modding 45-70 unless you're awash in 45-70 brass, well equipped to do it, and have time.
