The one in my avatar is a FA Mod. 97, 5 1/2 in., in 45 Colt. Beyond a shadow of any doubt it's the most accurate revolver I've ever owned. I don't recall it took any special effort to get to shooting it accurately but I've had it 22-23 years. I know my 100 yard, steel buffalo target is a gimme every shot if I do my part. I'm shooting 8.5 grs. of SR-7625 under the RCBS 255 gr. KTSWC that comes from my mold with my alloy at 263 grs. It's fairly snappy.

The FA97 is the very definition of svelte. It's like driving a Corvette when you're used to an F250.
People generally love them or hate them. It's good to have options...

I like the 97 but dont even own one. I shot Big Bore's .45 Colt 97 out in Texas last year. I had changed glasses and was having a terrible time with open sights. He has a Trijicon RMR 1MOA on it. I could actaully aim with it. Very accurate gun and fun to shoot.
I call it the Skeeter load out of habit but Skeeter got the load from Elmer. Elmer even shot the load in Charter Arms bulldogs. It is a great load and kills deer and hogs just fine. I shoot that same load in 7 or 8 of my 44 Specials and it shoots great.

This 97 had a 4 1/4” barrel for the first 20 years I had it, but I couldn’t shoot it very well so it mostly stayed in the safe. Last year FA installed a 9” barrel and turned it into one of my favorite hunting guns. I really like the way it handles like a magic wand to kill deer, and I have a new appreciation for the 357 Magnum cartridge. imgur.com/a/s2jkw1k

One of my favorite revolvers was my freedom arms. 97 45 Colt. Loved to carry it, loved to shoot it, but I was just so inconsistent it did not seem to work for me. Some days I could group an inch at 25 yd and other days three to four times that. When I shoot my 83s, I can group them all day long. Encore is right, it is an incredible firearm that takes some mastering for most people. And I could accomplish that at the bench every once in awhile but for me the true application was away from the bench where I struggled. I sure do miss that gun. Honestly, I think about it every week. I'm working on mastering 475 linebaugh from freedom arms currently. I think this will be easier.

From the posts, it clearly doesn't work for everyone.
As strange as it seems, I had to learn to relax shooting these guns.
A heavier gun keeps tension on the muscles and counters any flinching.
The extremely light 97s require you to relax. There's simply not enough counterweight otherwise. Once I learned that, it was easy.
However, I won't admit how long it took me to learn that...

Nice info, thanks for sharing. I knew that Skeeter didn't invent the load, but I didn't know it was listed in Sharpes book. I have read the book online, but it's been a few years now. Wish I had a printed version, I prefer real books.
