Doc on a sog soldier stated he used a Marlin lever gun in 444 to destroy the morale of the viet cong with its devastating wound capabilities ! Had to look up when the cartridge was developed and was surprised to learn it was in 1964.

Mad Dog he be called. Knew his fate.
Several very good books contain his story. Carried 5-6 sidearms. Was all over. Little known outside the community. But well known in it.
Like Richie Ginther in racing. From GT-40s first run to chasing Sterling Moss in his greatest win to Hondas first F1 win. And teaching Hollywood stars to drive.
Shriver was something else. Marlin 444 story is the real deal.

Short version, oddly saw a youtube video on him last night at work. I'd google up the titles of the books and raid the library..

...I remember U.K. officers using big bore hunting rifles against WW1 enemy snipers hidden behind steel armour plates, but the .444 on unconventional warfare is something really new for me: if something was destroyed, for sure was not the counterpart morale only...

Years ago my father lamented not buying a book he saw at a Texas gun show. Though the title escaped him, he recalls the topic; domestic guns used in the jungles of Vietnam. The book featured photos and stories of guys using guns they'd brought from home. A Ruger SHB .44 mag and even a Marlin .444 are two he recalls seeing as he flipped through.
If this book sounds familiar to anyone, I'd love to know. I've been searching for it for years.

I had an Uncle who spent a few tours with SOG during the mid to late 60's. He passed on due to cancer we're sure came from the Agent Orange.
He didn't talk about things much when I was younger, but opened up alot after I was enlisted, even if he did call me an "Intell Puke". Those were some very brave and effective MEN!

A bit of a side track. Major John L. Plaster. I have some of his books, and have met the gentleman a few times. Top notch books, written by a man who truly has "Been there,,, done that" and yet,, he's down to earth. My latest book of his,, "SOG A Photo History of the Secret Wars" is on my desk at this moment.

That’s something…….those folks are something else. They interact in a different way …….they know what they know and don’t know. But when you offer a different outlook that works better. They grab it and embrace it. They don’t mind being wrong if they can improve.
