When a bullet hit a steel plate of any kind,, it fragments. Recovery of lead from that is usually harder & often you lose a percentage of the lead due to dust fragments.
Shredded rubber is a good stopper,, and if backed by steel plate to prevent bullets from leaving the trap can allow the recovery of most of the bullets.
Several indoor gun ranges use the shredded rubber, with a steel backer.
And build it larger than you THINK you'll need. If 18"x18" is what you think,, double that. If you doubt why I mention that,, go look at indoor ranges, and look at the ceiling, the walls the sides etc. Or heck,, go to an outdoor range & study the rounds that you see outside the "normal" impact area.

I built a steel box with belting on front and sand in the back. Only takes a foot of depth but I used 15” iirc. Belting in middle to hold sand back. Trap in bottom lets me dump sand through a screen. Stands on legs. Made a target scroll on front.

“24” wide by 18” high. Could be built with wood I think as well. Spout under has slide above it. Drop sand out bottom and screen. Stuff I had laying around.” Pics and details from Jeff. This is exactly what I had in mind when I started the thread. Now to find the stuff to get it done.

This is awesome. What calibers does it work for? And how badly does the sand chew the the lead bullets up?

I shoot 45 Colt ruger loads and some 500 L. I use a mixture of sand and sawdust. Impact at 1200 or lower it works quite well. The sawdust decreases the abrasion to the slugs. I think I mixed about 30 percent into the sand. Most rounds don’t get half way into the 15” depth.

It is kind of a waste though length wise. But it’s just stuff I had laying around. Conveyor belting is your friend

Most of the bullets I cast are 300-700gr. You go through it pretty quick that way. While I generally don't bother with the 300s, thought I probably should, with the 500 and 700gr stuff I usually shoot at a large Rubbermaid container full of range sand. It's extra work and a bit of a pain, but I get most of my lead back. I suppose I could get all of it back with a sifter, but I'm only willing to do so much.

I've been shooting an oak stump for a few years. Wonder how much lead is in there? Especially at over an ounce at a time from the Linebaugh.

Various members of my family (stupidly) shot at an ancient maple tree for about three generations. It died and finally fell a couple years ago. As it rots I've been picking bullets out of it and bringing them home ever since.

I’ve known a guy or two who swore they used a big old tire and on the backside where the back side of the rim would be they hung a steel gong. When the bullet hits the stew plate the lead splatters out in all directions with the inside of the tire catching most of the splattered lead. Keep some sort of a scoop and bucket nearby to recoup your lead. Now the lead will have a bunch of rubber in it and stink to melt down but shouldn’t be any the worse for west. I have never tried it myself but I’ve been tempted to for sure. A friend had done this, he said it worked very well. He screwed a piece of plywood to the front to staple targets to. This is a timely thread, I'm researching pellet traps, I want to hang one in the living room in an oak cabinet to shoot pellet guns into.
