, a low pressure 45-70 would be debatable but a 416 Rigby is a big bore. Just me. If you ever shoot a low pressure 500 gr. Black powder load in one, you will learn what penetration is. I see it different then you, you're talking two different classes of firearms, pistol/revolver and rifles. 45 acp is a BIG bore in the handgun classification.

I knew there would be different definitions of Big BORE, but this has been eye opening.
Thru the years, I've read different opinions of the term. Never expected so many angles.
Great discussion and very educational...

Great discussion and very educational... Well let's throw you a curve ball encore. Classify the bores of shotguns? Then after that we'll talk about classifying muzzle loading rifles!!! You openned a can of worms. LOL

I've no interest in either of those things.
But, this is my (and probably "the") most respected resource for revolvers.
While some writers certainly provide some hard data, it's usually slanted more towards entertainment and sales.
On here, you just get experience and the occasional troll.
But, speaking of writers providing data...I'm sitting here reading the latest Handloader. Brian Pearce has an excellent handloading article on 44 Magnum Rifles.
I've got a New Unfired Ruger #1 44 Magnum. Wondering what it'll do getting the same treatment the Henry and BFR 357 Magnum got?
It'll all come down to capacity and throat depth. The Ruger #1 won't flinch at the extra pressure...

Hopefully he will give data rivaling what we used to get for the 788. Now that was a very fun gun to load and shoot.
