This photo was on the news last night, it's a one room school house in the wilds of central Idaho. There are only two of them left in the state. It only had 3 students. The lady doing the reporting said one of the students had to ride a snowmobile down a long road to catch the school bus & then ride to school. Said they didn't have a basketball team............. my wife used to attend a one room school, for her 1st couple grades ( maybe she'll be mad at me mentioning that... age thing ) I don't think there are any more, in Minnesota, with the merging of small school districts... there are a lot of 5-6 letter for each town school districts in our area... I drive by one old one room school ( now a house ) every day, to or from home... coincidentally not the one my wife attend when she was young

My Mom's side family, hunting camp, was a one room school house. Pot belly stove in middle of floor. Two-two hole outhouses out back.

One day traveling in SE Montana couple years ago, I drove by at least two country schools and two churches. They all seemed to be maintained and used. I need to ask of the status of them now.

My older brothers and sisters went to a two room school house about two miles from home, usually walking both ways. Grades 1-4 in one room 4-8 in the other. I'm 71 and started in the new elementary school, indoor plumbing, hot and cold running water and central heat. Which I didn't have at home, we had cold running water, outhouse and wood stove with no insulation in the house. It wasn't a big deal then, didn't hurt me none, it was just the way it was at that time.

Wonder why you would need a two hole outhouse for a one room school? Maybe one side for boys & the other side for girls??? UP until about 20 years ago we had a 2 room school house here on the way to Freedom Arms, two of my cousins went to school there many, many years ago. They rode their horses about 2 miles across the valley to school & back. I've showed photo's of it before, someone made it into a house now.

The island I am moving to has a one room school house and is the smallest school district in Michigan. This year I believe that they have 5 students.

My Catholic elementary school was 2 floors with four classrooms per floor. We stayed in one room for an entire year, then moved to the next grade / room for the next year. Our classroom sizes were +/- 50 children and the vast majority were A students. Now they talk about 20 +/- (Twenty) children per class size for optimum learning, sheesh.
Man those nuns ruled (literally) with a big stick :-)

When my aunts and uncles were growing up the one room school house was on the corner of my Grandpa's farm in SW Minnesota. Uncles always told the story of having to walk to school in the brutal winters. When Grandma heard them telling us those stories she always put them in their place and said "yea for about 200 yards!" I really miss her.

Dick I think that’s right, there is a little schoolhouse on the property adjacent to me. It has one or two rooms but two separate entrances/mud rooms, I was told one for boys and one for girls. Maybe to give privacy for taking off winter clothes or something?

Maybe the handicap ramp is for someone who’s handicapped?

Thanks for sharing. Not much stuff like around here, or anywhere. I'm too young to have partaken, but I recognise that type of life is better for society and people in general than what we have now.
