Got this from a gent in CO who said he's 99% sure it's factory original; will check with Ruger after the holiday. If it's not a factory gun someone did an outstanding job on it. pics to follow.

That's a cute little bugger!
Handy too, I bet. Sort of an upscaled Bearcat.

Now THAT might be the proper place for your RW lightning grip frame.

Is that a stainless frame or polished out aluminum? Frame is dated '84 not sure what special runs they would've done like that back then? Looks awesome either way and definitely handy in that caliber. Would like to see a new ones like this.

Have been pursuing the "ultimate" woods walking .32 SS configuration for a while. Have two 4 5/8" guns; one by Salmon River custom and one with a RW Grip frames Potato judge jr. grip frame in aluminum. Have added Fermin's bead front sights and the new 2 dogs/ RW rear sight blades to both of these. They are pretty neat and shoot well but then we saw Fermin's fixed drift adjustable rear sight and got an old SS Bisley to put that on; and maybe cut the barrel and on and on for maybe another step towards our goal.
Then this little bugger showed up! Took a chance, and man is it nice! With a 2 dogs/RW rear blade and bead front sight from Fermin, and a 'tater judge jr Aluminum grip frame (with lanyard loop) it could be the final answer. Where have we heard THAT before? Stay tuned.
Thanks to tdbarton for post the photos.

The Lightning grip frame is going back to Ronnie as it doesn't fit my hand all that well. Potato Judge jr is perfect.
The little single six has a polished aluminum xr3 red GF.

The neat/ interesting part of that gun is the other side… and that’s not saying that the 66 isn’t cool. I’m fairly sure that was originally shipped to a Milk Farmer in Maine. One of the first~800 guns that had the frame marked SSM. Studying your first 2 pictures I can see the “ SSM”. The “Bare” Aluminum GF not factory, but if one likes the 2 tone look, you have it. Ruger didn’t do barrels less than 4.6” back in the mid 1980’s, and the “Lawyer Notice” removed. But I like it!! The 4.6” guns were the shortest & least #’s built. I’m thinking it was probably a 6.5” or 5.5” originally. It will be interesting to hear what Ruger says. My 3-32H&R shooter’s, and I like 2 tones…😁 Can’t bring myself to shoot my SSM marked guns. Found them NIB, Shipper and all. These 2 are both cut down NOW to 3.6”, have been working on this project on & off for a while, this is the only pic I currently have. There BOTH 22 Magnum. FWIW: I ended up with #66- SR1911. NIB ,,, haven’t shot it yet either…🙄

harveylogan gave you excellent info.
The g/f was not polished like that from the factory. And that barrel length was not an option in that serial number range. And as noted,, the SSM marked frames are rare. A good looking gun,, that's been modified by someone who knows how to do a good job.

Got a call from the Ruger folks today. Our 3.5" SS is a custom job done by an unknown smith. It left the factory in 1984 as a 6.5" gun. I lucked out on this one and surely would like to know who did the work.

The Lightning GF felt awful petite in my hand, then I had Chad make my Buckeye Burl grips as thick as possible, and it feels pretty ok to me. I wear 4x gloves, and While I don't wear a size 16 wedding ring like Mr. Wells my 14.5 wdding ring is considered large in many circles.

The 3.5" "Mystery Single Six" SSM is now in TX. Ronnie confirmed it is a quality revolver 'smithed by someone who knew wat they were about. Ronnie is going to stick a gen5 PJ Jr. grip frame (with 1913 S&W lanyard swivel I provided) on it with stabilized walnut stock panels, as well as fit the Bisley hammer/trigger. Waiting for a Call from Barranti to get a holster ordered. Feel like a kid in the candy store!!!!
