Just picked up my 71 from the smith putting the red pad and sling mounts on it. Looks fantastic now. He threaded the end of the mag tube for the front mount and a regular wood screw mount on the stock. He told me he had just ordered some Supergrade sling mounts if I wanted to have the rear inletted for it. It should cover up the current hole with no problem. Something to think about. He thought it was factory checkering too at first

My dad has collected Winchesters since the late 1960s. The first time I shot one of his '71s I fell in love with the rifle and the cartridge. Enough so that I converted a Mauser '98 to the round (and we were able to get the magazine/cycling to work flawlessly). It would've made more sense to put a .338-06 on the action, but there's something about that old .348 Winchester. Perhaps it's the really fat base and gradual taper.
