***** Reckon I’d trust this as a top finish. To reach inside the leather, my choice has evolved to straight clear mineral oil. heat the oil on a stove, stir in shavings of pure bees wax. Apply with flannel cloth or sheep wool held by forceps. If the holster has mildew, I wash it with warm water and a small dose of vinegar. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then dry completely before mineral oil & wax treatment. Deep south environs swung me away from animal oils such as Neatsfoot, etc., as animal oils feed mildew in heat & humidity. Whereas, clear mineral oil repeals mildew. Proportion of bees wax depends on whether leather must retain stiffness (more bees wax), or the leather continually flexes (less bees wax). Maintenance intervals depend on use and climate. David Bradshaw Immensely helpful. Grew up using Neatsfoot as it's Dad's default oil treatment. Struggle w/ mildew in IA and hope this cleaning solution and beeswax/mineral oil combo does the trick.

Having spent pretty much my entire life in one of the warmest and highest humidity climates (Texas), and being a holster maker, I've never once experienced mildew of any kind and have always used pure neatsfoot oil. I'll admit that I've always 'hydrated' sparingly and maybe that's the difference. All my leather projects get a thin brushed/sponged-on coat of neatsfoot oil prior to a top coat and not once have I ever been contacted about mildew.

I've use baseball glove softener since forever. It never makes the leather too soft.
