I have a chance to buy a 3 screw .357 Blackhawk in very good condition. I'm thinking it would be a great candidate for a .44 Special conversion. I have plans to do this very thing! I'm going to use a 5 1/2" Colt new frontier barrel(same thread pitch) and a brass RW 1860 grip frame

My new model 357 is definitely the newer, larger frame, so I guess it wouldn't be as handy as the medium frame flat top models. Maybe just finding one of the newer flat top 44 specials is the easier option. I can see why someone would do an old model conversion though like the OP is considering if those were already on a medium frame. Seems like that would be a really neat revolver with old-school feel to it. Exactly…. The NM 44 flat tops are really fine factory revolvers and even though they’re bringing high prices currently, you can get one a heck of a lot cheaper than a custom. Here’s one from a great seller that’s not too expensive… Read the comment… www.rugerforum.com/threads/2009-flattop-blackhawk-44-special-4-5-8-blue-in-box-w-all.310219/#post-3134392

I have three of the 45 colt nm flattops and they are excellent. I love the frame size.

I sent this combo to Horvath a few months ago. 45 colt nm flattop. He quoted me a 2 year wait but involves fitting the s&w barrel, custom hammer spur and his general action work. You would be well served with one of these new model flattops in 44 spc or 45 colt.

I love the NM flattops, and believe the early Lipsey’s 44 specials to be the finest single action revolvers that Ruger has ever made. Their fit and finish was just outstanding. However, I wish they had made a lightweight version with an aluminum XR3 grip frame, like the original 1950’s guns. Since Ronnie wells has come out with his aluminum NM grip frames, all is now right with the world. While I’m planning on having a couple OM flattops converted, NM flattops in 45 Colt and 44 Special with aluminum gf’s added, really do everything I had envisioned with the old model conversions, at a much cheaper price. I like to kick around the hills in Colorado, and 35 oz single actions (and less) are a blessing!
I once believed that NM triggers could never compare to OM’s, but having experienced action jobs by John Gallagher and David Clements, I now know NM triggers can be just outstanding (and without sacrificing ignition reliability).

I have a related question about these 357-to-44sp conversions. I know a lot of them have been done with old model Rugers over the years, but what about new models? I don't have any old model experience, but I have a new model Blackhawk 357 and am wondering if it would be a good candidate for this conversion as well. Is there something about the old model that makes it better for this conversion than the new model, other than just being a cool vintage revolver? Is there any practical reason why this wouldn't work just as well with the new model? www.sixguns.com/range/horvath.htmNice read. Thank you for the link. Somehow a New Model conversion doesn't seem like the way to go. Either an Old Model conversion or just get one of the newer flat-tops already in 44 special.
