As compared to an N-frame Model 29. The 29 pictured is one of three that my Grandfather carried on a near-daily basis. My Model 69 was purchased - in part - due to the 29 being much to dear to me to carry around while clearing brush and knocking around chasing turkeys.

Didn't realize the real size difference between the two until I saw that photo. Might have to look at a 69. I guess it's a touch bigger than the 44 Bulldog I thought I bought myself, but the missus thought I bought for her. You know who won that discussion. I like eating things other than sandwiches.

Great pictorial on modifying your Model 69. I’ve carried and shot mine for about a year now and will say it is my all time favorite S&W revolver. When I first got the gun I fully intended to do something about the lock, but now a year later, I never even think about it. By the way, how do you clean the discoloration off your cylinder? It looks brand new. Mine has dark discoloration on the outside of the cylinder at each throat that won’t come off with any solvent I have tried. Look for a Birchwood Casey lead removing cloth, it’ll take all of the fouling off of stainless guns. I cannot say if they can be used on blued guns or not, I’ve only used on stainless to keep them looking brand new.

Been following this thread. I've been considering a S&W model 69 for some time and can't decide. I just read an article on a Tisas Commander size 1911 that was tempting. My interests are split, which gets both confusing and expensive. I'm really too old to be considering more guns but I guess I'm not ready to give up yet.
Having read both pro and con on removing the internal lock, I'm wondering about the kit mentioned. Is it a commercial kit or a collection of parts?.

I've used a couple of the "original precision" Kits. One on a 4.25" 69 and it works great. Cleaned up the action a bit, but noticable. The other on a J frame and no problem.
FWIW I love my 69 44 Mag. great shooter and nice to pack. Smaller real estate signature on your belt, and handier.

A little action work. Grips. Sights/optics. Lock delete or deactivation with Tromix cylinder release. None really mandatory, but easy enough to do at home without breaking the bank. PJ - could you tell me what grips you got there on both?

The stippled grips look home-modified and are an unknown maker. The smooth ones might be old Herrett's. Both eBay purchases where I was looking for styles to try for drawing and recoil purposes.

The 4" pictured above appears to be wearing an old set of Nills. The 2.75" are Herretts.

Finally handled one of these today. Nice little guns. It's on the short list now. $846 at Palmetto State Armory

For quick close shooting it works. I struggle with a consistent sight picture for longer range and precision shooting because of the lack of reference points. The dot is above the V and that’s all you get.

Slightly off topic perhaps, but an upgrade and/or modification nonetheless--It seems like I remember reading that some were converting the model 69 to 45 colt. I don't see how that would work given the size of the cylinder, but there were those who seemed to think it would be "easy". However, I don't remember seeing any model 69's that were actually converted.
Does anyone have any information on this?
