Ken is correct. When first introduced,, Ruger did only offer the SP-101 in .38 Spl only. But,, due to the switch over to .357 mag, and desirability, the .38's do command a little premium to collectors. Especially the foreign marked ones. Looks like the 38 spls are back in production/stock

This is a first year production 38 special. 2 inch barrel . Pachmayr grips and XS standard dot front sight. It needs a heavy bullet to shoot to the sights. Rimrock 173 Keith with 6 grains of unique or 6.5 grains of longshot averages 1000 fps and groups 3 inches at 25 yards. These are +p+ 38 special loads but mild compared to a 357 mag. These same loads average about 30 fps less from a 2.5 inch gp100. I read some where 38 special chambers can shoot faster than 357 chambers with 38 loads. What does everyone think? True or false? I have 10 or so 357s but this my only 38 special so can't test that on my own.

Nice setup Hounddogman! That ammo and that revolver are a GREAT combination for almost all purposes.

They will stand 357mag pressure, so stands to reason one could load the Special to the same pressure and get great velocity with less muzzle flash and blast.

My friend bought one of the SP 101s when they first came out. His had green inserts in the grips. I remember Massad Ayoob calling them "Pocket Rockets." Here’s mine: GREEN inserts, “three digit” serial number

I am thinking a 101 in .327 Federal would make a damn fine EDC

Only sp101 that I own is a 9mm. It stays in my F250 as a truck gun.
