so, a long time ago, I bought a pair of early 1st year 45 Colt consecutive serial Ruger Montados, I was expecting to use them for Cowboy action shooting... I think the 1st year, or at least to start with, they came with these grip frames, but SASS outlawed the use of these guns, with those factory grooved grip frames... my understanding, was as soon as that became an issue, Ruger discontinued these grip frames, as they built the Montado specifically for Cowboy action shooting... anyway, my local org, let me use them that 1st year, with the understanding that I'd change out the grip frames, over the 1st winter & not compete with them in any other SASS competitions... ( as a beginner, I wasn't anywhere near good enough to beat anyone with my "cheater" grips )... curious if anyone has ever seen them, or knows more than I do, on when they were switched out... I still have a pair of these in my revolver parts drawer...

In general,, the only way these grip frames are collectable,, are when they are installed on a Montado as originally shipped. Off the gun,, not much, if any premium.
SASS banned them,, (if my faded memory is correct,) made a ruling that they were not "period correct" and had been built just for competition.
I've wanted to try one to see if they make a difference in shooting.

I've never seen one... Didn't know they existed. Me too and I can't for the life of me understand why CAS banned it my understanding is they were grooved to offer a better "grip" certainly the original grips could have been grooved, or checkered or had friction tape wrapped around them... if a period gun fighter deemed that necessary, before SASS ever came along I wasn't real happy about having to change out the grip frames, but I suspect, if I wined loud enough to Ruger, they would have changed them out for me... at cost??? it must have been very early on, that they switched them, if "no one" has ever seen them before... I'm not trying to get rich off them... my pair of guns, has gone on to several custom modifications ( still within SASS rules ) so they'll never go back on the guns... I'd like to keep at least one, just because they are factory unique I'll try to remember to pull them out of my parts drawer, & get a few better pictures ( the original picture I posted was from an original Ruger Montado ad

You are correct about how a period correct gunfighter might alter his gun. BUT,, SASS, made the rules,, and they didn't always allow certain things. Heck, when I used to shoot SASS,, I was REQUIRED by the LOCAL club to wear boots. I'm known in USPSA as "The barefoot man!" But the local club wouldn't allow me to be PERIOD CORRECT. Even when I showed them an article in the Cowboy Chronicle about a woman who went barefoot. They cited their club rules. Go figure.

here is an old thread on the Ruger forum... sounds like the grooves were ok for cowboy mounted shooting, but not for cowboy action shooting... nothing more on how many were made, or when they stopped www.rugerforum.com/threads/montado.83692/

Rule committees are the reason I stopped shooting competition.

Rule committees are the reason I stopped shooting competition. This is the reason I don't get involved in any group events, PERIOD. Always a few that try to rule the roost. The way things are today, EVERYTHING is offensive to somebody. So, rules and whining are worse than ever.

I don't mind rules for SAFETY,,, or to help level the playing field. But to say "We want things period correct" then allow the gun in Mounted shooting yet not in normal SASS,, is unfair or just strange. Just like my going barefoot at a SASS match,, and it's allowed,, but the club disallowed it.
USPSA has never given me any issue about being barefoot. And I shoot local, state & regional matches.

You could "lose" the soles on a pair of cheap boots and be barefoot on the bottoms! {;-}

I never knew much about SASS but remember finding those grip frames strange. I think under any amount of respectable recoil those grooves would be quite unpleasant, but, those revolvers weren't designed with hunting loads in mind, and I can't say for sure cus I've never fired one. Then years later I put a stainless XR3 grip frame on a single six, and later had the thought it'd be neat to try a grooved grip frame on a recoil-less single six. I figured a lot of folks would pull them and put standard frames on them and they'd be for sale but I never see them, just the guns. If you ever sell them I'd buy them on the chance one of them might mate up to one of my single six projects. I like those original hard rubber grips on the single sixes too.

I obtained an early Montado direct from Ruger and it had the grooved grip frame. Remember SASS outlawing them, the change was early. Dought if more than a few hundred grooved grip frames.
