David I think those mannlicher forends came from an outfit called Schneider's I always liked the look of them, saw an ad in older magazine and cut it out will look for the ad and try to post it.maybe they were offered in the fox ridge catalog. MY Dad had a contender in 35 remington my mom got him for christmas when i was a kid always thought i would get that one and never did. then one day saw a 357 herrett at lgs and remembered see a set of rcbs dies at another lgs so i bought the 357 herrett and dies next day that started the addiction.

I have a 22LR Contender carbine with the black plastic stock/fore-end & Leupold 3x9x33EFR. I added a swivel mount Harris bi-pod, plus a small bunny ear rear bag. Managed 8 for 8 on a 50yd KYL rack one time so far. Typically takes me 9 or 10 shots. The last 2 targets are obscured by the duplex reticle. The Contender action isn't well suited for KYL due to having to rebuild the set up after each loading, but it is fun. 35 Remington is the largest cartridge I've fired from a Contender. 50yd 22LR KYL/TYL Rack

I think you might need a few more cacti to stop the errant bullets unless you really don’t like your neighbor 😜😝

I have a late 70's pre easy open and absolutetly love it. Its a carbine now. It weighs nothing and the trigger is phenomenal.

Do tell, Sir. Start with the carbine - I love these as a carbine.
I currently have a: 223 with the 21" (?) factory tapered barrel in stainless. No pic that I can find. "Mud room duty," waiting for coyotes, otherwise sits idle.
Stainless, 24" MGM 30/30, and absolute joy to shoot and makes me feel like I really CAN shoot.
Blue, 18" MGM 357 Mag, threaded and adorned with a Liberty Mystic X, by far my most-used, most useful gun ever.
Blue, 20" MGM 357 Max barrel standing by in case I ever get time to hunt deer again.

The 70's contender I use for smaller cartridges. I have a 22lr barrell I had rechambered to 22 mag and shortened to 18 inches by Mike Bellm. I also have a 20 inch 25-20 mgm barrel. The trigger breaks at 2lbs. I have a 6.8 spc barrel on the G2 contender. The Encore has a 22 hornet barrel a 414 supermag barrel by mgm thats 27 inches and a bergara 45 muzzle loader barrel. The older contender is my favorite.

Within the acceptable pressure limits of the Contender, I don't believe there are any bad choices.
Some are certainly more efficient than others. Others are certainly more user friendly.
I've always found the 30-30 Based Wildcats the best choice for the Contenders. The Simple 30-30 Ackley Improved being the top of the heap.
For decades I've been going to build a 22 Magnum Carbine. For some reason, I've never gotten around to it.
This has been an excellent thread with so many great cartridges mentioned.

I have never used the Contender as a carbine but might have to give it a shot. An SSK barrel in .250 Savage would be sweet

I also have a 15 inch 357 max for the Encore and a 10 inch contender barrel in 223. I have been trying to sell them.

I've been back and forth on maybe a 38-55 barrel, or maybe the new 360 Buck Hammer barrel - 24" in either and no optic, but came back to my senses and have not perverted my plan to maintain a small personal battery of useful (to me) stuff and not more than I have time or cash to keep up with. Correcting many decades of too many irons in the fire.
I even thought for a moment or two that IF the SSK-50 EVER materializes, I wouldn't need it anyway, but,...
I currently don't have a rimfre of my own. That would be a pretty good way to keep a "spare" action functioning and not just taking up space.
Good idea!

I don’t post about Contenders too much but I have several. I have duplicate barrels in 22 LR and 44 Mag caliber. I might have to gift one of my frames to my Son with a couple of barrels.
Funny how they tend to multiply. Once you start it’s hard to resist Contender stuff when you come across it at any kind of a reasonable price.

Speaking of Contender carbines. I've posted about this one in 7-30 Waters recently.
