Grew up in Central NY in the 50s&60s when you rode your bicycle to hunt with a shotgun. Things changed In PA now and hope to be in Cody by next fall. NOTHING IS STATIC, "CHANGE" IS ALWAYS GOING ON. MOST ON THIS FORUM ARE OR HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF "URBANIZATION". MY HOMETOWN HAS GROWN AND CHANGED A LOT FROM WHEN I WAS GROWING UP BUT, THANK YOU LORD, IT IS STILL CLOSE ENUFF TO THE COUNTRY.

The only thing that doesn't change is the fact everything changes. There used to be 16 different places outside of town were people could shoot. All gone now. There are either subdivisions, wildlife refuges, or working gravel pits. I used to be able to get a spotlighting permit to hunt in the desert at night. No more. From my place to the ski resort is 16 miles and goes from 2500 to 6000 feet. We used to be able pull off any place and shoot. No more.

I am old enough to remember when the Now Left Coast of Washington, Oregon and California were also great. For many years, my wife and I thought we'd want to return to the Olympia area.
A few friends who have been there since we were there have had noting but bad news about the growth and the social climate. We've pretty much put that dream out of our minds. Other places we'd lived have gone the same route. It's like a degenerative disease, eating up places which were once desirable places to live.

Have been fortunate to have travelled, worked and recreated in the inter-mountain west for over 50 years and have watched the desirable areas change dramatically. It seems every place we ever thought we might want to live in the West has filed up with folks who have driven up land and housing prices while fleeing the states they have screwed up. By moving en-masse for "the lifestyle" they have, IOHO, screwed that up also in much of the rural west. 55 years ago we settled in an eastern mountain state (with a lowly reputation for about everything) in the heart of the Appalachians/Alleghenies and are still here. We love the West and visit every year for assorted reasons but are really glad we are not one of the "transplants". We visit, spend our money, and return home to a state where few folks, seemingly for now anyway, don't want to move to.
Good luck on your move; we hope it turns out to be all you've hoped for. Maybe we'll cross paths some day in a dog town.

I’m glad to say, I have 4 shooting ranges on the property, and I can walk out 100’ From the front door and sight in at 50 or 100 yards. Fingers crossed, county living stays this way thru our lifetime.

Have a 50yd pistol range and a bench for 100 yard sighting in up by the pond. To stretch rifle barrels, we have to drive 8 miles west to a friend's mountain farm where we can shoot steel from 200yds to out past 1K if we want to. Chronographing off the deck makes load development pretty convenient. Yep, rural living is the berries if you don't mind wood heat, the occasional power outage and a 25-mile trip to the grocery store.

Kulyspel in the winter bring or better yet wear your longies! I'm sure you've read up on the "fur trade" and Mountain Men who moved in that area in the early 1,800s. Everything has changed except the weather. Look into taking care of your animals in severe cold and winter survival kits for your vehicles and home. The elements are not your friend in that part of Montana. And to the guy whose headed to Livingston, you're moving to the Continental Divide. High winds and low temps. The elements are a real challenge in Montana and the Mountain west.

We like that area due to the proximity to the wilderness area, fly fishing, the ranch where we hunt and buy horses from, etc. I know it's not Florida and that's the point. 😁 We like the rugged terrain.

Was out in Montana and Wyoming for the 1st time about 26 years ago. Discussed buying a bunch of land and actually looked over some for sale. Probably should have bought some. Long drive though.

I'd love to move to Montana. Just can't pry the Missus out of NC. Personally I despise living so near Charlotte. Can't imagine why people keep moving here.
