I had a 3" 65-the stainless version. Still kick myself for selling it! Yeah, me too. Live & learn, I guess... S&W M65-3 / 3" Oh, MAN!
THAT is a thing of beauty.

The nice thing about the 3" K-frames is the ejector rod is full length. The Kimber and the Colt have short rods........

I have six 3” K frames. Three 65s, two 64s and a model 10. The 3” 13 eludes my collection, never seen one for sale
Actually I just bought a 3” 64-3 parts kit so some 4” donor gun will be getting converted eventually

So is it basically a beefed up model 10? Nope, nothing beefed up about it. The magnum cylinder is longer and the barrel face where it sticks through the frame is shorter. The 10 and the 13 are the same frames. If anything is different it might be the heat treat on the cylinders.

The 3" K-frames are just about right, here's my 65 and 66 hanging out. A comparison picture between 2.5" and 3" 66's:

Thanks, appreciate that. All stock, but for the Pach's, & the M66 hammer. Unfortunately, it currently resides in some one else's safe.

I had a 3" M-10 that got sold when I thinned out the safe contents before we moved 120 miles to a different city. Last fall I was offered a trade in 3" M-13 for the same price offered here so I bought it. In retrospect I should have kept the M-10. The slightly longer Magnum cylinder makes it feel heavier, or not as well balanced as the 38 Special version, at least to me. Add to that, the K-frames of this vintage don't like much full power ammo, as I saw demonstrated by my department's issue M-66s. The deputies who preferred the revolver carried and trained (including qualification) with Magnum ammunition. The department had more failures with the K-frames than I was ever comfortable with. YMMV, Dave PS: As a firearms trainer and someone who's carried a gun my entire adult life if you count the military, I've never proscribed to the "practice with 38s and carry Magnums" mind set. Interesting observation. I never really noticed the longer M65 cylinder causing a balance issue, but despite my best handloading efforts, my 3" M64 always shot tighter groups. I'd buy another 3" M64 (or 3" M10) in a heartbeat, if it was in good shape - and the price was right. Heck if pushed, I'd even settle for the magnum version - if not shot loose.

Well, couldn't leave that sleeping dog lie and was in town Saturday and stopped by to look at it carefully. Ask is 6, offered to me for 5.
Carryup/timing is good in double action, there is a little fore and aft cylinder movement hammer up or down. Opened the cylinder and the bolt nose has been heavily rounded causing the bolt to snag on the bolt hold on the breach face. The bolt is of proper length. The sunken breach face where the ejector rides has been heavily polished to the point it might effect headspace or cause the noted cylinder slop.
Double action, and trigger return are typical broken in S&W, maybe abit of love given to the strain screw but still enough authority to slap a hard primer.
Athletically, typical bluing wear on either side of the muzzle with some corrosion line on the left side of the barrel and inside the barrel with some corrosion pitting inside the corrosion outline inside the barrel.
My take would be a 3-4 bill gun that may require a barrel set back and a new bolt at the least.

Barrel face erosion is the #1 turn off for me with a S&W revolver. I have turned down many otherwise pristine guns because of this. However if you can do the work you can make an awesome shooter out of an otherwise shot out piece of junk. I eventually bought the brownells tools and set back a 65-3 three inch that I snagged for a great price. A gun that I was uneasy with at first turned out better than factory.

Anyone with the ability to do that correctly, has my admiration. I limit myself to the light stuff. Skilled S&W DA full service gunsmiths, have been getting harder & harder to find - in recent years.
