I've decided it's time to take the plunge. I just ordered a Ruger Anniversary 357 Flattop to be the donor gun. My thoughts include a 4 5/8" barrel and a SBH hammer. Think of it as a close cousin to my Lipsey's 44 Spl.
What types of things should I be thinking about? This is going to be a shooter so I don't need or want anything too fancy. Are there any "must have" features? Niceties? I'm on a budget so it needs to be practical, but, I don't want to get it back and realize I forgot something either.
What does the collective wisdom of the Board have to say?

Here a few things I have done on most of my customs
1. Oversized Belt Mnt base pin - I like the locking #5 but JMHO
2. Black powder chamfer the cylinder
3. White line the front sight
4. Bowen rear sight with white line
5. Grips by Cary, Fishpaw, Kolar etc
6. Bisley hammer but that is just me versus the SBH
7. Full action job with tightening the endshake and BC gap
8. Remove legal epistle on barrel but I don't own any of the new guns so I don't know if it is on the bottom or not.
9. Steel ERH
10. If going for a lightweight gun, AL grip frame round butted and scallop the loading gate and recoil shield.
Just some ideas to play with.

Maybe re-blue w/CCH or hard-chrome it. Ruger finish isn't bad, but on a custom like that I like to upgrade. -Lee www.singleactions.com

White line the front sight I've seen this before, how does it help? My Lipsey's I painted just enough of the ramp to fill the sight picture.
Bowen rear sight with white line I figure a Rough Country is a given.
If going for a lightweight gun, AL grip frame round butted and scallop the loading gate and recoil shield I gotta admit, round butted guns do look sharp, scallops look good too.
Maybe re-blue w/CCH or hard-chrome it Hard chrome is not a bad idea, I can rust a gun just by looking at it.
I'm a bit undecided about caliber....should I have it made up as a 41 mag "just in case" or have a dedicated 41 Spl? I'm leaning toward 41 Spl because I have a Bisley 41 mag that I use for whitetails.

I believe the only thing Kings6 & Lee have missed - for my taste - is a lanyard ring. Don't know why, but I love those silly things.
Surely you've stocked up on .41 Spl headstamped brass........
Oh yeah, a fine revolver like that would need to be carried in equally fine leather.
It's a fine cartridge. The only .357's I have left are slated for .41 conversion. I've only a small handful of .44's & a couple .45's. Everthing else is a flavor of .41 caliber.

Just personal opinion but if you already have a 41 Bisley, I'd just go with the 41 Special. That is what I did on the little gun from Horvath since like you have already have a 41 Mag or two. That said, the one I am having built right now was to be a dedicated 41 Special but I called Hamilton and had him do a second cylinder in 41 Mag so it is a convertible gun. Redundant, yep, but if a guy is going to spend the money to have a project like this done, pick up a few more cans and mow a few more lawns to get what you want so there are no regrets later. Oh as far as the while line front sight goes, it is just much easier for me to see. Here is an example of it on my SP101.

I agree with Lee, I'd opt for the mag and then load down to special levels in mag cases if you want. Mag cases are everywhere and since you're using a gun capable of handling the mag, it makes sense. Now if you were trying to use a single six as a base for the 41.....

In the evenings, if you plan to ever hunt with the handgun, definitely go with the white line front. When my standard front blades "bleed" out in the evenings on deer, the white line stands out like a beacon. In normal situations, it also gives the illusion of a thinner front sight blade which is nice for just shooting. Here is the little round butted gun of Kings6 in 41 special. It is one of the handiest little guns I've ever had the opportunity to handle and is one of my favorites....I love this little gun!

Surely you've stocked up on .41 Spl headstamped brass........ I just received 500pcs this week
That depends on how dedicated you are to the Special I've had a photocopy of the 41Spl "Taffin Test" in my reloading binder since the day it was published (20 years?)
Here is the little round butted gun of Kings6 in 41 special. Now that's what I'm talking about!

Spare 10mm and 40 S&W cylinders. Shooting 0.400" bullets down 0.410" barrel doesn't yield good accuracy. -Lee www.singleactions.com

IMHO those 41s on the OM BH are a bit "chubby"... I would (and did) spend my $$$s on a FA 97 in 41 mag.. My ISP is pretty hosed up right now or I'd post a pic of a OM 357 cylinder along side a FA 97 cylinder and my 41 Mag FA 97.... ;D Want blue? Spend the $$$s you save on some flat black paint!

Did I mention I was dropped on my head frequently as a child? I seem to have the 10 mm on the swollen brain lately.
