Here's mine by JRH. Rebore by Siegrist, remarking by Harton, grips by Culina. My Model 624, Model 696 and Model 69 couldn't compete with it, so they went down the road.
I also have this little guy. Also by JRH. 396 Cylinder & Shroud on a 686 frame.
And then this one. Cut down 396 Shroud and cylinder on a roundbutted 681.

Very nice! You said the "69 couldn't compete". Care to share some more about that? When you used had the shrouds installed, were the barrels fabricated or did you purchase the factory barrels with them? Thanks

When you used had the shrouds installed, were the barrels fabricated or did you purchase the factory barrels with them? Thanks Jack fabbed to barrels to match the shrouds. I think he also had to add a pin in the frame to index the shrouds. The Model 69 weighed as much as an N Frame Mountain Gun...Maybe? If not, I didn't like the way it sat in the hand as well. It had a lock. It was a K/L Round Butt. My preferred grip is a square butt Magna, and if it's going to recoil much, I prefer an N frame grip to a K/L. For a Magnum, the 69 loses to an N frame, and for a Special, this custom L frame MG is lighter AND sexier. I have a Ti cylinder for the L frame MG, but I like the SS one in this gun. I think the Ti cylinders are meant to be carried a lot and shot a little, anyway. I also let a Taurus all titanium 44 Spl go once the 681 conversion was done. The 681 conversion weighs more, but it sits in the hand and rides recoil better. All of these L frame 44 SPL's pretty much only get Skeeter's load.

not sure i understand.
if it's a "just because" sort of thing, go for it.
maybe someone smart can help me here, but, i thought going from a 6 to 5 shot would involve some action/timing work as well? no?
the 5 shooter 69s i've seen so far are not target guns but the couple ive seen at our local range, the boys can keep ww white box 240s on a playing card at 25 yards which may be all you need in a back-up piece?

I can't say that I came up with the idea, but Michael Bane did chime in on a post many years ago I wrote about building the exact same thing on another forum. I was talking to Mr. Stroh about doing the work for me, but ended up not moving forward on it. I have three Mountain Gun barrels, three 696 cylinders and hands, and six extractors still, I believe. I think I'm going to do a .41 Special 686 Mountain Gun, now. Keep us posted.

You say L frame .41 Special? Here are a couple Bowen built... Those look great! I'd love to see a picture of the forcing cone's thickness, if you happen to have one handy. My 296's is pretty thin, and there isn't a lot less diameter to the .41. I have an old SFPD Model 58 that I need to load up some .41 Specials for until I get this project done.

Nope, mine was built by Hamilton. I have always believed it was the gun S&W should have made, although, honestly, the only market would be the people on this forum!
