magman, Bisleyfan got to it before I could. If your gun has "Best Grade" marking on the frame top then you really have a jewel. The gun itself is not marked. If it were one of his "best grades", it would never be parted with.

I'm just wondering where on the internals did he find the room to do that?

He did an N frame conversion for me. His bluing is something to behold.

Just prior to his retirement he built a tight 45 Colt on an S series M29 with and 8 3/8" barrel I provided. He did all he did as far as building it "tight" with minimum chambers, a Taylor throat and twin ball locks on the crane. It is proper.

That model 29 45 Colt is one of the nicest DA Smiths I’ve seen. I have had a couple of Jim’s guns and always enjoyed the conversations around the projects. The old flat top 44 he customized for me is his contribution to my Quest. One of the most distinctive blue jobs I have ever seen. I wish I had bought a few of his front sights before he retired. I have them on a couple guns and need one more if anyone has one to sell.

Not a catalog, but a Stroh custom that captured my fancy back in 1990. Also a "pinto I wouldn't mind owning

I never met him but talked to him quite a bit on the phone. One of the nicest people in the shooting industry.

Yes Jim is still around. Here are a couple of Stroh .45 sixguns. postimg.cc/fVDGwj4Mpostimg.cc/8jV3HBzLGlad to hear he is still around. He converted a S&W Model 28 to .44 Special for me. The bluing job has a slight plum cast to it now. I kind of like it.
