I would like to go on a buffalo hunt next year. Assuming these ranch animals might be a little easier to put down than a wild one but I don’t know. I have never hunted buffalo before. To those who have what is the minimum recommend handgun caliber? Would a .41 mag do it ? Thanks for the advice. David

With the right bullet and placement yes.

David I HAVE TAKEN BUFFALO WITH HEAVY .45 COLT, .480 RUGER AND .454--ALL ONE SHOT KILLS. I WOULD NOT TRY IT MYSELF WITH A .41. THESE ARE REALY BIG CRITTERS

Thank you John. I would like to have a FA83 in .475 Linebaugh but I’m just not convinced I can handle the recoil. I’m not a novice shooter by any means, just trying to be honest with myself. I guess my second choice would be my 1895CB with a hard cast bullet.

Gary Reeder has killed about everything with his 41 GNR IIRC, which is a 41 cal but a bit hotter since it's a 44 magnum necked down. He makes cervical spine shots, not thorax.
A 41 stout enough for buffalo won't feel a ton different than a 44 or 45 hot loaded.

I guess my second choice would be my 1895CB with a hard cast bullet. If I may interject here the beauty of a 475 is it doesn’t have to be run full throttle to be extremely effective and evidenced by Mr Taffin Bull with his FA. The 475 is pretty cost prohibitive to shoot without handloading so once you are set up for the cartridge you can load it up and down as you please. Start with a big cast bullet at 850fps and work up the recoil ladder as you can manage it. I basically settle on a 375gr bullet at 1050fps and it recoils no more than most 44 mag loads do. Several guys here have killed Buffalo with that very load. Zeus come to mind.

I have used the .475 L (400 @ 1400) and the 500 WE (350 @ 1350, 370 @ 1250) at distances out to 80 yds. PERSONALLY, I would not use a 41 Mag., although I‘m sure it could be done. Multiple shots MIGHT be required. There is a big difference betwen a cow or small young bull, and a large mature bull.

A 400 grain bullet in a 480/475L at 1,000-1,100 fps is not bad. The full tilt Buffalo Bore 475L's take the fun right out it.

Nice Buff John Thanks all for the advice and comments. Got me rethinking the .475 LB
I do reload (since 1992) but would have to secure the dies and brass for .475

I have personally seen them killed with .223 and 30-30, fmj in the .223 and factory 150gr. in the 30-30. I would not hesitate to shoot a Buffalo with a good hard cast 250-265gr or monometal solid. It might not be my first choice as I have better options, but at bow hunting ranges a good bullet and placement will do the job quite well. I have spot and stalked to within 25 yards of them, my first bull shot was with a bow. If you’re looking for a better option then 475L, 500L, 500jrh, 500we, 500Max, are all good.

My daughter killed a big cow bison with a Marlin 1894p using bearthtooth cast in 44 mag. Broadside shot in and out ,twice. Made a small circle and expired

All I can think of now is a 2" , 2lb Buff steak. Sigh. Steak fries, asparagus, and a Yuengling.

Rufus, you should be able to handle the recoil for one shot. Those big bullets don't need a lot of velocity, just give them around 1100 fps or so & join bula at the table but make some gravy!!
