I drew a Kodiak bear tag for this fall. Pretty pumped. Won't be the first time I've hunted brown bears or Kodiak, but the first time for both together. Aaron SWEET!! What area? I drew a DCUA Walk-in Sheep tag. I've only hunted Kodiak once. Handgun for deer for me. The 4 other guys were rifle hunters. 5 days we got 15 deer, a bear and a goat. Congrats on drawing the DCUA walk in tag! Thats a tough one to draw. Buddy drew it last year and we were able to get him his first ram. Good luck on your hunt.

Cool that your bud got his first ram. My first ram was also a DCUA Walk-in ram. My bud and I each got our first rams on that hunt. That was in 2006. 2 years before that I went in with another friend that had drawn. First sheep hunt I was on. He got his ram and I got bit by the sheep hunting bug. I was 46 when I got my first ram. I've been blessed to have been on about a dozen hunts since, gutted pack and ate off of 10 rams, lowered the boom on 3 of them, polished off one a partner wounded. I've got some custom Rob Rowen grips on my 500L from a ram I shot in the Brooks Range. That gun is in my avatar pic. A couple other guys around here have Rowen grips on their guns from the same Ram. It's been more than I could have ever imagined having got a late start at it. Now here I am, turned 60 last august and hope this DCUA Walk-in will be another first for me. I'm hoping for a handgun ram with the FA 454. This Kodiak Bear thread just turned into a Sheep hijack!

Alaskan Brown bear hunt is definitely on my bucket list... Mrs Cousin is in the service & married to a Native Alaskan... I'd love to go up there a couple years, just to help him out with his hunting, & prep... to cut my teeth, before spending the money for my dream hunt... & while I love my handguns... I've got no issues using my Browning 338 Win Mag with at least 100 yards between myself & one of those big Kodiak beasts

I'll likely use an xp-100 in 35wsm or 330 Dakota. 475L will be going too, but I'd like a bit of distance between me and the bear

Good luck on your bear hunt. I enjoy hunting Kodiak for deer. We see the big bears out all the time.

What a fantastic opportunity. I saw a grizz up close (within 20 feet) a few years ago at the exhibit in Bozeman, Montana. It was Brutus who was about 900 pounds (R.I.P. Brutus). What a massive, powerful animal. I have no desire to go looking for one that isn't tame. I have three Grizz within 8 miles of my house in Idaho and I don't want to run into them either, but I have a .475 LB or .500 JRH just in case. I have taken many blackie's but the brown version is no joke. Good luck and we look forward to seeing some pics.

Well, its getting close. I booked the ferry the other day. Have my 330 Dakota sighted in and drops confirmed. Still messing around with the 475 a bit. Shot some 425gr from cast performance with 26gr of H110. Recoil is stout. I have others to try including 330gr Lehigh WFN and a 409gr from the 477-640 mold. What does the group think? 425gr LFN cast performance, 330 lehigh WFN, or a 409gr from the 477-640?

Penetration will not be an issue with any of those, recoil recovery might be an issue. I'd use which ever I shoot the best.

I’d rather have a bit more than 330gr of weight but it would probably be just fine. Mostly I’d shoot the bullet that I was most confident I could hit exactly where I wanted when the moment arrives.

Personally I like the 477-640.

I cast a pile of the 477-640 as solids last weekend. Gonna give them a go and see how I shoot them. The FA shoots the HP version very well with 2400.
