South Dakota requires 1700 ft lbs min for elk.. Does that seem kinda high and quite limiting to you folks ? I think it's so people will use rifles or specialty pistols only for Elk. That fpe requirement would rule out most of the wheelgun cartridges.

Latest Virginia hunting regulation on big game. No mention of barrel length.
Rifles and pistols using centerfire ammunition (.23 caliber or LARGER) Pistols must generate at least 350 foot pounds of energy or greater. Yes Yes Yes Yes Yes

Would pay to review each state's regulations before making a trip there. In addition to length restrictions, many also have energy, diameter, & other restrictions. Illinois has all of those in addition to a prohibition on semi-autos.

In NC; No barrel length or caliber restrictions to use a handgun for hunting, during normal hunting seasons & times. HOWEVER,, there are restrictions on use & carrying a handgun on Game Lands,, during other activities. Or if you archery hunt, you are allowed certain handguns (.22 cal only) with some restrictions. During non-hunting activities on Game Lands,, a handgun can not have a barrel longer than 7.5".

NE Has no length restrictions. Hunting Deer with a handgun must have 400' pounds of energy at 50 yd
