Mr Taffin has it,The CB brass would not fully enter the chambers of my 45acp revolver. There is no need for CB brass anyway as acp works just fine and is free.

Interesting video on using Starline 45 Cowboy Special brass in both Colt and ACP cylinders. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4un-7cFdsE0&ab_channel=FortuneCookie45LCHe shortened the Cowboy Special brass slightly to fit his ACP cylinder. P.S. Shortened Special brass in ACP cylinder might work in new models but not old models because of recessed chambers.

I have a Ruger SS Bisley .45 ACP/.45 Colt Convertible. The throats in both cylinders were undersize. I reamed them to .4525" with a Manson Reamer complete with pilots that worked perfectly. I am extremely happy with my convertible.
Cowboy Special brass works PERFECTLY in the .45 ACP cylinder without issue. No "conversion" necessary. Headspace is correct, again, without issue.
My revolver is extremely accurate - with either cylinder less than 1" at 25 yards off a rest with a variety of loads. I normally use the .45 ACP cylinder with either .45 Cowboy Brass or .45 ACP brass with target loads for range use. These target loads also do excellent work on edible small game.

It seems like this cowboy brass is just the old autorim with a thinner rim. Am I right?

I checked Starline's site. Same internal capacity as the autorim. Their only caution about using acp load data was to avoid exceeding pressures suitable for the type gun you were shooting it in. I guess it is intended for mouse farts mainly. With light bullets and fast powder it would be more efficient than the Colt or Schofield plus less likely for a double charge to slip by unnoticed. But there is that longer jump to the throat.

Cowboy Special brass was originally developed for "mouse fart" loads for the .45 Colt with both black powder and smokeless powder. The accuracy demands of Cowboy Action Shooting does not require great accuracy. Using the short cases in a .45 Colt cylinder works fine for the purpose intended but you will NOT get great accuracy with the short case.
However, to further explain what many of us has found, the Cowboy Special brass headspaces perfectly when using the .45 ACP cylinder in a Ruger .45 ACP/.45 Colt convertible. The advantage is it allow you to perform a roll crimp when using heavier bullets with a crimp groove. Many have had their .45 ACP cylinder altered to allow the use of .45 Auto Rim cases in single action revolvers (not normally possible). However, the .45 Cowboy Special brass works perfectly with NO alteration of the ACP cylinder for the convertibles. I consider that a GOOD thing! YOu can use heavy bullet loads intended for the .45 AUTO Rim cases with issue in the single actions.
I am a big fan of the .45 ACP/.45 Auto Rim cartridges for range and small game use, so I have welcomed the .45 Cowboy Special cases for my single actions.
Understand, they are NOT suitable for double action ACP revolvers due to entirely different headspace requirements.

Well, after some lag time due to schedules, this experiment finally made it to the range. We only shot 12 out of the 45 ACP cylinder using the 45 Cowboy brass but it works well. The load was 5 grains of Universal and the 45-230FT Accurate bullet PC'd @ .452". Both 6 shot groups were 4" at 50 yards (we have our handgun benchrest at that yardage) with no flyers. This load was just a safe try load and we'll try other powders later with this bullet. I have a set of 45 Auto Rim RCBS dies enroute and we'll try a gentle roll crimp as the bullet will allow it.
For the loaded rounds to chamber in the 45 ACP cylinder, the 45 Cowboy Special brass had to be trimmed slightly but as I didn't do it I can't say what the length ended up being. The loaded rounds drop right in and the brass ejects like I planned on.
Was it worth the effort? Well, yes it was. My shooting partner only has 100 of them so while it probably wasn't on the fun list to trim 100 pieces of already short revolver brass, they will probably last a long time. It's not like we'll have to chase brass all over the place.
