Over a year ago I purchased three snubnose revolvers. One was a Smith 640Pro, another was a new Colt Cobra and the last was a Kimber K6s DAO 2" with night sights. When several months of testing had transpired, my perfect revolver would have been the Kimber K6 with the Cobra grip. Out of the three I kept the K6 and sold the other two. Three weeks ago I purchased a Kimber K6 3" DA/SA. Finally made it to the range last week and only had some 357 handloads with me, one box. The action of the gun was typically Kimber K6 standard (very smooth). Had trouble with the load grouping. Had a couple outliers and I marked it up to a new gun.
Today I went to my indoor range and was shooting for group at 20 yards. 5 different loads, 3 357s and 2 38 Spls.
38 Spls were a 148 grain wadcutter over 4.0 grains of 231 that has been pleasingly accurate in my Ruger MC and a Smith 586 6" and the original Kimber 2". Firing results single action 5rounds offhand weaver stance 3". 1 of the six wadcutters was out about 10" from the rest of the group and it went sideways through the target, great for terminal ballistics but not so much for accuracy.
Next up 140 Hornady 357 load same story, as the wadcutters only offhand group of 5 4+ inches offhand at 20 yds and a flier that keyholded through the target 12" from the other five Hornady rounds.
Same drill, same results with two more 357 loads including an old standby of 158LSWC over 12.5 grains of 2400. The other 38 load was a 158 LSWC over 4.8 grains of Unique and it had a flier/keyhole on a 6th round All five loads produced a keyhole round in a full cylinder of ammo that was fired. The only thing changed was the location of the keyhole. Of the five they went from 10 o'clock to 6 o'clock and all about 9 to 12 inches from the group. The 38s were nearer the group.
Just for the record the Ruger MC I took along as a control weapon grouped 3 of the 12.5/2400 load 2.5" off hand at 20 yards, and it came close to that with the Hornady and wadcutter 5 round groups with no keyholing or fliers.
Calling Kimber Monday and I guess we will find out how good their customer service is.
