The only experience I have with Speer half jackets was 357 146 gr. I loaded some in 357 Herrett. They didn't make it to the 100 yd target.

They disintegrated. The target was peppered with small irregular holes. I guess 2300+fps was a little too much.

Especially through a T/C featuring freebore, a sharp leade, and rough rifling, which isn’t unknown among Contender barrels. An occurrence certainly experienced in handgun silhouette. This shooter watched through spotting scope as Nosler 7mm 140 Ballistic-Tips fragmented between pigs and turkeys (between 100 and 150 meters), from a Contender 7mm TCU Super 14 (bull 14”). Several times during 80 round match. In the case of the 7mm TCU, suspect centrifugal force on bullet jacket badly incised by rifling. with velocity about 1,800 fps. In the case of your Contender .357 Herrett, it may have been sharp edge at mouth of chamber gabbing shoulder of the copper cup. Meanwhile, pressure tries to turn bullet inside out. Accelerates in freebore. Bullet slams sharp “leade” of rifling. Gray lead spatter on turkey silhouette; target doesn’t fall. David Bradshaw
