Does anyone have experience loading a 270 grain swc bullet in the auto rim? I have some .454" diameter bullets that would work good in a Smith & Wesson 25-2 that I have. If I could get them to 800 fps or so that would be enough. Thanks, Kelye

Starting loads listed fo4 the Lyman #454424 gave me the results you seek years ago in a pre-m25 1955 I had. Was a 6-1/2 inch 5screw fitted with auxiliary .45Colt cylinder. Chamber throats on both cylinders ran .457. I used an NEI mold that dropped an oversized version of the RCBS 270SAA that also included a shorter crimp to me plat dimension that fit the shorter cylinders S&W used in some cases.

I fired many rnds with a 454424 at 263gr over 7.5gr of old "smokey" Unique thru various Colt and S&W 1917s most in Auto cases crimped heavily in the groove in Half moon clips. I will admit to firing @ 2K rnds of these thru a shaved 2nd mdl S&W in .455 with Brit Proofs. This is waaay over proof load level for .455 Eley. I shortened the barrel to 4" and carried it some. These were all hand cast of WW and sized to .452. Being older and wiser I would probably back these down 1gr or so in 1917. They would probably be OK in a modern gun. This was all back in the 70s and early 80s and it was an accepted thing...........
I do not encourage reckless hand loading and no longer use these loads in older guns.

The undersize .452 bullets in the converted (shaved) .455 may have lowered the pressure of these proof loads as the throats were probably .457........

I do not encourage reckless hand loading and no longer use these loads in older guns. In Handloader #306 Brian Pearce listed about 400 +P loads for the .45 Auto Rim. I'd suggest either ordering a back issue or subscribing to www.loaddata.com for access to the data. In the article he states- "As noted, SAAMI maximum average pressures are established at 15,000 CUP being intentionally kept low to prevent soft lead bullets used in factory loads (Peters/Remington and Winchester) from leading. When using hard cast or jacketed bullets, handloaders can bump pressures to the same level as the 45 ACP - 21,000 psi (standard) and 23,000 for +P loads. There are no "weak" .45 ACP revolvers, as even vintage U.S. Model 1917 Colt and Smith & Wesson revolvers have proven completely adequate to handle these pressure load levels...."
I check the water capacity of a Starline 45 AR case against that of a 45 ACP case (don't recall the brand); one held 25 grs., the other 26, so their capacities are pretty similar. So I use ACP/AR data pretty much interchangeably, but that's just me. So to answer the original question, I did load some of my own bullets cast from my 45-270 SAA mold. Mine weigh 285 grs. or so, and loaded over 5.5 grs. of Unique MV averaged 830 fps from one of my 1917 S&W's. I tried 6.0 grs., a load also taken from the aforementioned article, and MV averaged 872 fps. Again, I'd suggest getting a back issue of the magazine, it's a really good article.

As a recent 25-2 owner with oversize chamber mouths I've found (so far) that the 225 cast semi wadcutters fired from AR cases shoot the best. Wanting to try a 250-260 SWC sized to 454 next.
This 25-2 with a 4" barrel is a manstopper from another era.
