So my son wanted a ram for Christmas this year and through some serious negotiations with his mom we ended up in Tennessee going after a ram and I went after a hog.
We left out after Christmas dinner and drove out. When we arrived my son for some reason decided I should go out after hogs first. I had ordered a Freedom Arms 41 mag 10” and it had came in about a month late, but just in time for the hunt. I had purchased some HSM 41 mag bear ammo in case I didn’t have enough time to work out a load. Luckily I had because time was never in my favor preparing for this and I had to use the HSM ammo.
We got dropped off about 75 yards from a stand on the side of the mountain. My son and I climbed into the box blind and started preparing. I ranged some trees in front of me so I could get accuracy’s ranges in preparation for a hog to go down the game trail. About an hour rolled by and my son was getting restless and I was having a little trouble keeping him quiet but he did a good job. Not too long after we heard some rustling behind us and I turned to see a pair of sows. Then more kept coming up a small draw and ended up with 8 hogs behind us. I turned in my chair as quietly as I could while rearranging with my son. I began ranting th hogs and picked out a largish sow and found an opening in the direction they were traveling. When the chosen sow got there I let here have a round behind the shoulder. She jumped around and turned and was very confused from the shot. She stopped right behind a tree that was split and I could see her left hand in the crook of the tree and hit her again. She went down hard and my son and I started over toward her. Both shots penetrated completely.
That afternoon we went after a ram. They had dropped us off again by a different box blind. We climbed in and waited. Soon enough some rams came into an opening. There were a couple Jacobs 4 horn in the group and my son really wanted one of them. So we waited until they were on our side of the field. They were moving the right direction but were joined by some painted desert rams. They stayed in a group and no shots were presented that didn’t have other game in the background so we planned to climb down and around the back side of the hill to get into better position. I brought a tripod for him so he could shoot easier. We moved around and tried to get in position. We waited a while and they began to move in single file. When only the two 4 horns were left I told him to get ready. Finally the one he wanted was in the rear and the other was in front. I said as soon as it was clear to shoot the rear ram. The first ram moved off and he shot. The ram took two hops and fell over dead. He was incredibly excited and we had a great time.
I’ve got to figure out how to post pics on here, as soon as I do I’ll post pics.
