The post here about a holster for a Single action 4 5/8" brought up where to carry extra cartridges. I stated my preferred method of carry and will expound on that a little. I carry a Ruger Blackhawk ans six extra rounds in a belt slide, the slide just behind my holster at about the five o'clock position.
So, here's my routine: With the hammer at half cock (except for the Blackhawk) and the loading gate open, I cradle the gun in my left hand, loading port up. I can rotate the cylinder with the thumb of my left hand. I withdraw a cartridge from the loop with my right hand and insert it into the chamber. With my thumb I rotate the cylinder to the next chamber while I get another cartridge from my belt. I repeat this action until loaded with all five or all six rounds. I shut the loading gate and transfer the gun to my right hand, cock the hammer and then ease it down. Of course with Colts and similar copies, its the "load one, skip one, load four. Cock the hammer and ease it down all the way.
As a matter of interest, I load pretty much the same way for the double action revolver. Holding the DA revolver in my right hand, I push (or pull) the cylinder latch while at the same time I used my left hand to sort of cradle the gun and at the same time press outward on the cylinder with the fingers of my left hand. With the cylinder open, I rotate the cylinder with my thumb while getting a cartridge from carrier. I load the uppermost chamber each time I load, rotating the cylinder counterclockwise. This rotating the cylinder and loading the top most chamber isn't necessary, but a habit established long ago with me. When loaded, gently close the cylinder and return the gun to the shooping grip.
When using a speed loader, the process is similar, though I seldom use those things.
This is the way I do it, and habit established from over sixty five years of handgunning.
