As usual Ohio opener for gun started out with 25+ mph wind, blowing mist and sleet, water standing everywhere after 2 more days of rain on the already saturated area. I say in the Suburban thinking about not even going in, ain't worth getting sick the first day and ruining the rest of the season sitting on the couch. But after nodding off for about an hour I woke up and it was just blowing, so I looked at the radar And decided to head in.
I get more picky about conditions seems every year, but glad I did decide to head in. I took my time still hunting to the stand about 1/4 mile in, got to my stand and took the pack off to leave under the stand and took one last look around before climbing up and noticed a patch a weeds that seemed to be blowing around more than most around me, so pulled the Leica rangefinder out to get a better look since it was all I had for glass with me and after a couple seconds checking it out I seen ab antler.
I watched a couple minutes and could only get glimpses of the body just spots here and there but thought I had it figured out, ranged at 92 to 98 yards on some targets I could hit their so since I knew its head was angeling away from me decided to send one of the 270-SAA Mihecs its way, cocking the old 45 Colt with its Ruger only load I sent the mildly hard HP on its way, never seen a thing and the motion ceased.
I had to go back to the Suburban and drive around and come in the other side of the section as the deer had been working on the other side of a flooded ditch from all the recent rains. As I closed in at about 10 yards from that stand of weeds, there it laid, the 265 grn HP found it's mark entering the right shoulder and exiting the neck as you can see on the pick. . Not a monster, but a good bit of needed sausage laid before me. we got 6 days to fill the doe tag now,,,, maybe bleed the little brother to the 5.5" bisley, it's twin in 357 shooting the Mihec 180 carbine bullet, we'll see after a break.
