I have a precrossbolt safety Marlin 1895 that I want to convert to .50 Alaskan.
Who do we recommend?

John, Talk to Ben Forkin. I talked with him about the same a few years back. Seems like he preferred the 336 for a base gun. I’ve about decided to use an 1886 takedown if I ever go ahead with the project. I’m afraid my shoulder is wearing out quicker than I can get around to moving forward on it. Good luck! Should be a fun gun! Tim

Ashley Emerson asked me one time if I wanted to try his 50AK I said sure, then paused and asked what load he ran in it, 525gr bullet at 1950fps, then the thought worked through the headache I was fighting that that sounded like more fun than I needed and passed. But the same gun running a 450gr at 1400fps is a lot of fun and still would put a whopping on anything it should hit...

Good point! 525 at 1950 sounds kinda stout!

Reeder built mine. I used a 1895 cross bolt safety ( which I did the delete ) and added Marlins laminated stock and forearm. Gary insisted on a muzzle brake which I did not want but now I’m glad it’s there! The cartridge actually cracked the stock on the wrist when he test fired it. He repaired with a couple stainless steel pins . I’ve put many 525 grain cast through the rifle and it’s very accurate!

If your talking about Nonneman custom rifles, I wouldn't send anything to him. I sent him a 336 and $450 about 5 years ago and I have nothing to show for it, He won't even answer the phone.

Ben Forkin is a great choice.
Mic McPherson is also a Marlin Guru. Probably the most knowledgable on what they can be made into. He is a great choice also.
Regan Nonneman has done fine work in the past, alas the last few years he has been suffering some severe health problems which has caused great delays.

I have always wanted a 50AK on one of my Marlin's or 1886's.

Last time Nonneman answered the phone he told me he had health problems but he would finish my rifle in the next week, that was over a year ago and he hasn't got back with me since. I don't know what to do about it, he's got my gun and my money and I don't think I'll get either one back. It's a long way to drive or I would just go get it but I don't think it would do me any good, I never thought the guy would do this, I met him one time and he had a booth setup with John Linebaugh at the Tulsa gunshow. Seemed like a helluva guy at the time but just goes to show you can't really trust anyone this day and age. I tried to call him and I was just gonna ask him to send my rifle and my deposit money back but he won't answer, So if anyone has any advice I would sure appreciate it! I doubt I ever send anything to a custom gunsmith again after this.
