I picked up one of the 4.62" Ruger 480 Bisley revolvers a while ago and want a 400gr cast bullet mold for it, I currently have a 275gr mold as well as an MP molds 477-640 mold (325gr-350gr depending on the pins used.) I have drawn up 2 designs and would like opinions on which one I should get cut. The first one is a grove less design for Hi-Tek coating, the second one is based off of the SSK boreride truncated cone bullet.

Sounds like you have the mp-molds 477 640 light. I have and like the mp-molds 477 640. It drops a flat point at 406gns with my alloy, and a large hp at 386gns with my alloy. My gun shoots the large hp very well. I am still experimenting with powders and charges.

I think either bullet might work just fine but I would much rather go with a flat base.

At 1100 FPS and a modified alloy to let it open up, it’s awesome when it hits meat. We originally did that mold years ago and it hasn’t let me down yet. Nice groups at 50 and 100 from my 475. I’ve killed deer, pigs and bison with the hp version and none were shot more than once. My bullets we have been able to recover expand to almost an inch. Typically about .95”. On deer, I haven’t found one but exit hole is awesome

Dick I see on the TC bullet I did a.04" bevel base, it should be .03" I will update it, I do the small bevel base so after sizing I don't get a flashing ring of lead around the base. It seems to work on several other molds I did like this and accuracy has been great.

Well, I couldn't decide on which one to order so I ordered a mold with both designs in it....

One of each, in the same mold. I'd not have thought of that. Neat. Very limited casting experience here and in this caliber only have the Lee 400gr.. IMHO of that mold, the cannelures are too small, shallow. Grease grooves too, but if PC'ing, no issue. What are your hopes, uses for the Shorty 480 ? I like mine though action still crusty. For me here, not legal for hunting. The 6.5" here goes hunting. The Alaskan, I just NEEDED !

As for the crimp groove I don't know if Tom at Accurate Molds can do a deeper crimp groove? I am also using a profile crimp (taper crimp with a roll crimp) and have never had issues with other calibers. Yes my 480 is the 4.6" version and I will be carrying it hog hunting in the thick stuff. My loads will be 950-1050fps and plan to use the most accurate for hunting.

Saying the cannelures on the Lee 400gr are shallow. Yours look better. Luck on the hogs..

Of the 3 different Ruger 480's here, that 4 5/8" BSBH, when held, hefted in the hand, well, it speaks to ya, ya know ? After hunting season plan to spend more time with it. Am now thinking, an F/O front sight maybe. With a full loading of TB, it's a hoot ! I've shot FFFG loads thru her too. F U N .

I hope to do some load development after I receive the new mold, I already have some 250gr, 350gr and hope to get some of the mp 477-640 HP's cast up from some softer alloy along with some of both of the new designs. December is going to be spent getting it ready.

I tell you what, Tom @ Accurate Molds is an enabler.... I ordered this mold as explained in this post on 11/15/2019 and I received it today 11/18/2019 and what a work of art it is. Tom did the 2 TC Bore Ride bullets on the outside and the 2 bullets for the powder coating/Hi-tek coating on the inside and they are machined to perfection. I can't wait to load the pot up this weekend and cast some to play with.

Yep, Tom cuts a nice mold and is fast to deliver! Be sure to give us a range report.
