The Leupold dot, or at least the mount is set up to cowitness with AR-15 iron sights, that is why it sits so high.
It looks like Seekins Precision offers 34mm rings that should fit that sight and get it lower. Not sure it will be Match Dot low but certainly lower than an AR-15 mount. Going to have to make sure you have a very tight fit on the new rings to keep that heavy optic from moving around with the recoil from the JRH.

that is why I custom machined the slots... very tight fit...

I need to order one of these for my Bisley Hunter. 1" or 30mm though?

I got the 30mm after reading Max’s book about hunting revolvers.

I have some older red dot tubes that were 1" & 30mm just seems much bigger to look through

Another vote for the 30mm after getting Max's input years and years ago. My honest opinion is that the MatchDot is overkill for a hunting gun. I thought the adjustable dot would be the bee's knees for hunting but the reality is that I just set the dot on the 4MOA size and leave it there. Were I to go back and do it again, I would just go with the 30mm sight with the fixed 4 MOA dot and be done with it. What I have found to be worthwhile is to put a sunshade both on the front and back of the sight. It does make the tube longer but it cuts down on the glare from having the sun at your back and keeps that bright orange reflective front lens from being quite so visible in the woods.

Before you all get too carried away with mounts and rings. Don't know anything about the Leupold but I have 3 Ultra Dots that have been put thru 475 and 500 hell. Newtons law works both ways. Your not dealing with a 4x scope with a 30mm objective, these things weigh next to nothing. My oldest and most "abused" is on its 7th year on my 475 BFR using the rings that came with the Ultra Dot.

I like this thread. This sounds promising.

Got my rail from Weigand today. The ultradot is supposed to arrive on friday. It looks like I will be trying it out on sunday.

Will the ultradot fit on a Ruger hunter with the factory style barrel scope mount. Obviously would have to buy some Ruger 30mm rings.
Thanks Justin

A regular Ultradot will fit between the Ruger factory rings. The MatchDot will not and requires the Weigand mount I have shown in the picture above.

Are there extended rings for the Ruger mount, similar to the extended Leupold rings???

Has anyone compared how much of a difference there is in the balance of this revolver with ultradot compared to traditional handgun scope such as Weaver or Leupold?

There is quite a change in the balance point between the standard Ruger rings (on the barrel) and the dot mounted farther back with the Weigand rail. With an actual scope it will be even more significant.
The SBHH already feels just a touch nose heavy with nothing mounted. Adding any weight out front exacerbates the issue.

Well I didn’t get to shoot my 480 this weekend. The weigand rail needed some minor fitting. With the back of the rail in position, the front of the rail hit the back of the sight base. I filed a little off the rail and got a good fit, but I didn’t want to be rushed and screw it up. There is always next weekend.
