Seeing the thread on the conversion of the 28 to .41 Special made me think of the 27-2 that I had turned into a .41 Magnum... Had wanted to make it into a .41 Special but as the cylinder had quite a bit of rust pitting and I had a 58 cylinder that could be easily adapted I just had it made it a Magnum... The other two 5" Ns are a 1964 57 that had a badly rusted last 1/2" of barrel and a 657 6" that I just decided to shorten to have a three gun set... Original 27-2... ...hard to see how bad the pitting is on the cylinder and left side of the barrel near the muzzle... 1964 57.... 50' DA... With it's 4" and 6" brothers...all 64s... 657... ...and the ThreeFives.... From what Doc44 over on the S&W Forums says there is only one known Factory 5" 57...and that was made custom in the tool room for military officer who was a friend of the owner...and it is nickel...Doc44 now owns the gun and it is quite stunning. Bob I'd think more than just I would like to see a picture of that.

I once owned two blue velvet cased 1st year production M 57's... One 4" & one 6". They were EXCEPTIONALLY well fit & finished guns that featured the LONG gone mirror polished black/blued finish from that era of S&W. Unfortunately, both those guns went down the road when I was going through my crippling (And expensive!!!) collecting-borderline obsession with the Luger P-08 pistol in the late 90's...A reality that haunts me to this day as I'd love to have those guns back but we all know what's happened to the price of the older S&W revolvers since the Saf-T-Hammer acquisition. I couldn't get those guns back for less than 4 times what I originally paid for them today

Bob, those sure are some beautiful N frame smith's, wow! Wish I could find a set of original stocks for my presentation boxed model 27-2.

squawberryman...anytime you are in NH you would be welcome to shoot them...
bullseye...Lugers...one of the more addicting and EXPENSIVE gun collecting obsessions one can get into. Collector friend who died a few years ago had several...the one I really wanted to buy from him was a Stoger import Amerian Eagle Artillery...it was unfired... He also had an engraved carbine...
Dick...what year is your 27-2?

Dang it! I finally looked at these since my little brain was thinking 5" 41's meant the S&W semi auto 22! Wish I had my first year 4" 57 with cokes back but it went back to the person I bought it from. The only 5" N frame I have is a 41 mag but it is the tweaked model 58 in 45 Colt now.

Bob, I'm not sure, I'll have to look at the serial number, it's in the presentation wood box.

"The only 5" N frame I have is a 41 mag but it is the tweaked model 58 in 45 Colt now." ...have seen that gun several times and is a beauty.... That said, I would not bring that gun to Texas...I believe they still have a law on the books that is entitled: "Desecration of a Venerated Object". In some circles a 58 fits the definition of a Venerated Object....
