I had the opportunity to hunt a 22,000 acre high fence ranch in west Texas last week. My original target was to be a gemsbok but during a long stalk to get within range of a skittish herd, I came across this beast bedded in the shade on a creek bank. It was 92 degrees and sunny. I originally only saw the top foot of rack and sat down to wait. In about 20 minutes the wind swirled and he stood up. I was pretty shocked at his size when I saw all of him. I was about 90 yards and I put a Hornady 286 grain 9.3x74r bullet behind his shoulder and he stumbled. He never took another step. Not the Rockies but a fun hunt with friends.

That's a whopper for sure!!!!!!!!!!!!! NICE!!!!!!!!!
I can understand why you decided to take him. And while it's "not the Rockies" it's STILL an elk hunt. We have elk in NC, Tenn, Ky, Penn & many other states. Some allow limited hunting. And no matter what,, they are all still challenging hunts!

Yikes ! A trophy for sure. Hope ya got the meat cooled and on ice fast. I've not hunted or killed an Elk, but we have an Elk ranch across the mountain top from our camp and can hear them "bugle" this time of year. They have meat available, self serve, in a big freezer on their front porch ! YUM.

Curtis, that is one big non-typical elk! For guys like me that have hunted them for years, he is the stuff dreams are made of. I know there are free ranging elk in Western Texas and that the state does not consider them a game animal so hunting is kind of different but that doesn't change the fact that yours is a trophy!

I officially HATE YOU!!! I’m not sure which I’m more jealous of, the buck you took last year or maybe year before, or this little guy. Nice shooting, is your 93.x74 one of the Ruger #1’s? Trapr
