A co-worker and I were out gathering cows on the ranch we work and took a minute to untangle some wire next to a rock corner. When he rared back to kick an up-sticking piece of metal out of the way, he dislodged a treasure. The upturned piece of metal was the barrel of an old Winchester 73'. He gifted it to me, "since you like all that historical gun stuff." It's hard to explain to a the average non-gun-enthusiast why this is such a fantastic find. My imagination is all over the place wondering why this rifle was left/dropped, what was happening when it was dropped, etc. I have no idea what the caliber is, and I doubt Powers can work much restoration magic on it, but it has become one of my most cherished firearms.

Good question, it would be cool if there was a spent shell still in there.

My grandfather shot his first deer in deep snow near Crested Butte Colorado back in the late 30s. Shot the deer ran up to it slit its throat to bleed it out and went back to town to get help (he didnt even know how to gut a deer then). When they got back to the deer his buddy goes "wheres your rifle?", with a lost look in his face my grandfather realized he had no clue. When back to where he shot from and found a rifle shaped hole in the snow and dug and found the gun! Went back down to the deer and his buddy gets my grandfather settled down and says OK get your knife out and he reached for is knife to find an empty sheath! Guess in all the excitement he tossed the rifle and ran to the deer, slit the deer's throat and tossed the knife and as it turned out his binocs as well. Never did turn up the knife or binocs...

That was the first thing I looked for, but it is far too rusted up to tell anything. I’d have to remove too much to know for certain.

I still think it's kool. Enjoy it, I know I would. I'd gaze at it from time to time and try to imagine what led to its being abandoned.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how best to preserve it? Every time it's moved, small pieces fall off. The obvious solution is to just never move it, but barring that, anything?
