Ironically, the first time I formed a 1.40" 41 was back in 1993 (and my dad wanted to call it a 41 Martin). I only had a few dozen 414 cases at the time and never thought I'd accumulate enough brass to make it a go. So we did the 401 Bobcat instead on 220 Swift brass. 16 years later I'm glad I finally built one. -Lee www.singleactions.com

That is excellent work Lee...I could use a gun like that.
How about call it .41 Super?

I don't know how I missed this thread when it first started. I like the 414 Special.
Awesome revolver, and very special indeed.

it's been a while on any additions to this post. anything new Lee? Funny you should resurrect this thread. I have a new heavy .41 mold that just arrived. Haven't cast any yet, but when I do I'll post the details. As for the .414 Martin, my 5-shot will be getting a new cylinder soon. The nose on this LFN needs every hundredth I can squeeze into that frame (I made the mistake of going a little short the first time around). See below: We'll lathe the barrel near-flush to the inlet and build a longer 5-shot cylinder. Stay tuned. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

There's more than enough steel in a 5-hole 41 cylinder. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

as much as I like my BFR .500 JRH, I have thought about turning it into a 5 shot .41 mag 1.4" with a 8-10" fast twist barrel for long heavy bullets

as much as I like my BFR .500 JRH, I have thought about turning it into a 5 shot .41 mag 1.4" with a 8-10" fast twist barrel for long heavy bullets No need for that much twist. Plus I don't know of a maker cutting .41-cal faster than 1:14. The truth is, at these speeds anything between 1:14 and say 1:24 will stabilize those slugs. I've shot 335 grain from a stock Ruger tube and they did fine. Eventually I rebarreled it in 1:16, then the 1:14 you see above. Neither the paper or the chronograph knew the difference. Remember, .405 Winchesters shoot 300+ grain RNs at 2,200 fps in 14. If it's good enough for the .405, it's more than good enough for the .414 Martin (aka, the 1.40" .41) Twist gets dragged into a lot of handgun discussions, but consider this - what really dictates barrel rate are bearing surface and velocity. Weight influences each but isn't an absolute. -Lee www.singleactions.com"Building carpal tunnel one round at a time"

sorry, I meant to say 8-10" long fast twist barrel--meaning 14" twist

Beautiful gun Lee...I must have missed this when originally posted. Come to think of it I'm not even sure if I was on this Board in 2009...
Have you done any actually shooting with the gun...or just test loads for LOA? I have two 5 shot .41s, a 5.5" Reeder Custom and a 6" Freedom Arms 654. Velocity with 250-255 grain bullets is in the mid 1400s. I have a 300 grain bullet mold from Mountain Molds and rounds loaded up but have not chronographed them yet.
Thanks for posting and looking forward to the updated .414 Martin...

Any way you can post a pick of your round with a .41 mag round and maybe a .414 too please? BTW I second the .414 Martin idea.
