"The 2X Weaver is a perfect scope for these guns. I had one, used the combo on a Kodiak Island Blacktail hunt, shot 3 bucks. I then got my hands on a 4X leupold (same dimensions) sold the 2X Weaver. Wish I'd kept it. I've now got the 4X on the FA 454 and will probably buy another Weaver for the Hunter." ----Snyd ***** With the Leupold 2x19mm EER no longer cataloged, in fixed power I’d opt for the Weaver 2x28mm Extended Eye Relief. Just as Leupold forced other scope makers to get serious about water proofing, Weaver instigated industry development of repeatable micro-click adjustments. Despite its sleekness, and it is as attractive as it is durable, Leupold 2x19mm EER fits its objective in the body tube of the scope. I prefer a belled objective for ease of keep the lens clear as snow falls in cottonballs. Leupold's narrow & countersunk 19mm objective seems specially designed to trap snow. Ever mindful of my optics on the trail, there are times it requires a twig to clear a small diameter objective. David Bradshaw

Just picked mine up today and it's the first Ruger Hunter I've held and I have to say it's fantastic.
The fit and finish of the gun is great, I don't have my feeler gauges handy but the cylinder gap seems very tight. I need to figure out where my cylinder sits so I can pick a bullet and start on a load for it!
Also, thanks to Snyd, I found a Weaver 2x and bought that for the top. I liked the idea of a little larger objective lense on the front.
Bullet and load suggestions are appreciated! Mostly whitetails, but want to be set up for 100 yards.

I have used somewhere around 20 grains of WW296 and a 300 grain cast bullet with good results.

The crossbolt for Ruger rings should be 3/16” longer to fully engage the threaded clamping nut. While waiting for this badly needed improvement, 1) treat threads with fingernail polish, and 2) place a 10-32 internal tooth lockwasher under the Ruger nut. (10-32 external tooth lockwasher is too wide to fit the countersink in the ring.) Buy extra pairs of lockwashers, as teeth flatten within two tightenings.
To prevent sliding under recoil, push Ruger and Weaver-type rings forward against shoulder of the base before tightening. David Bradshaw

Well that pic up above is a 25yd and 100yd target with a 255gr rnfp from a Lee mould. I used John Linebaugh load data. You can see it in the pic written on the on target. But when I took the gun to Kodiak I was loaded with a 355gr WFN from an LBT mould. 1200fps from my Hunter. I shot the buck in the pic with it at about 110 yds. Right about where the accuracy drops of for that particular boolit/load. I few years ago I worked up a load with the 270 SAA boolit. 280gr I used Brian Pearce data. Verify this but 23gr H110/CCI350. I packed it on a Dall Sheep hunt but couldn't find a legal ram.

When you mount the Weigand rail, make a small mark on the mount and the barrel in the original alignment. Use it as a witness mark to ensure the mount is staying put under recoil.
I am not sure if they are still doing this but the original Weigand rails for the hunters used a hollow roll pin for the locating pins on the bottom of the rail. After a few hundred full power 300+gr loads my mount started shifting forward in spite of the bolts being tight. The roll pins started to crush and deform under recoil and allowed the mount to shift.
Weigand replaced the rail and changed the pins to solid pins. Everything has stayed put since but I still keep an eye on the witness marks.

I’ll replace the pins before I mount it if there just roll pins.

We are all so funny. We all spend hundreds of dollars then send the guns off to get hundreds of dollars more done just to tweak them to our own personal tastes. Trust me, I’m probably the worse offender so I know it’s the pot calling the kettle black. Bill Ruger is probably swearing at all of us non stop! Tweak=fix
