Nice, an episode for the 480 fans! Thank you Max. I have a question though. With the large caliber like the 480, why choose a lighter weight bullet? I think I remember the young lady shooting a 330-340gr solid.

Lefty, I’d bet it is more about the use of solid copper or brass type projectiles, lighter weight no longer means less penetrative powers. I’m rethinking my use of 450-465gr. Hardcast for 500L, and bear protection. 400-410gr. monometal bullets give less recoil and provide all the penetration you need. I’m looking forward to watching the new episode tomorrow at work. Trapr

THE 330gr LEHIGH .475 WFN MONLITHIC IS A PENETRATING SON OF GUN. BUFFALO BORE HAS A 1,400fps LOAD WITH IT IN 480R AND A 1,575fps LOAD IN THE 475L. I USED A 475L "MODERATE" HANDLOAD WITH THE 330gr LEHIGH @ 1,369fps IN A 5 1/2 INCH BOWEN NIMROD AT THE BASH TO TAKE A MEDIUM SIZED BOVINE. ONE SHOT WENT IN A REAR LEG AND EXITED THE OFF SHOULDER, THE OTHER SHOT WAS A BROADSIDE SHOT, THAT BULLET MAY STILL BE GOING. DON'T LET THE "LIGHT" WEIGHT FOOL YOU, THAT IS A GREAT BULLET.

Weight really isn't an issue if the bullet doesn't deform, you can add more velocity if you want, you can take recoil down if you want, the lighter weight is going to shoot flatter but that's not a big item for a six gun (five gun) Not really a solid but when I used Barnes X bullets in single shot handguns I always dropped down one or two bullet weights because I knew the bullet needed velocity to work & it couldn't fail at any high velocity. I always used 185 gr Barnes X's in the 338/284 handguns. Only recovered one on a Blue Wildebeest.

I think I remember the young lady shooting a 330-340gr solid. Thank you for the kind words! Copper is lighter than lead and those bullets are as long as a 400+ grain lead bullet. I know it’s a bit counterintuitive, but they aren’t giving anything up from a standpoint of penetration. I used the same bullets on Freakshow (the gayal hybrid), and they performed admirably. I recall that it took some time for rifle hunters to accept the lighter weights of the Barnes X bullets. They thought they were losing terminal performance moving to the lighter weights.

Thanks, Im not discounting the the penetration and I understand that copper or brass is lighter than lead and brass or copper is just as big or long as lead. But like you said, its counterintuitive, lol. I enjoyed the episode nonetheless.

Episode 3 very informative ! Max , was your test partner tradmark? Again very well done! Thank you. Yeah that’s tradmark. Everyone who attends is in essence a partner in the testing, but he and Jack Huntington are stalwarts - and co-conspirators LOL!

Just watched episode 4. Max is hunting in my neck of the woods. I didn’t get a chance to deer hunt last season as I had spine surgery at the beginning of november. This year I will be out and ready. I took the whole week off. I think I will start with my .41 mag.
