I love small, light rimfire revolvers as kit and fun guns but I can’t shoot them well. I figure that a 4” heavy/bull barrel would still be compact but may greatly enhance shootability. Any opinions on this? I do have a S&W Model 34 J frame that I can use for such a project. Which donor barrel could one use? May we fit a Model 617’s full underlug 4” barrel on a J frame? Wow, that idea just gave me chills because of its awesomeness Which ‘smith would be willing to take on such a project? Could this be done to a Ruger LCRx?

Andrew....apparently your long drive home each day gives you time to plan "projects".... :-)
I don't think that a full lug 17/617 barrel could be machined down enough to fit and still have an acceptable appearance...
One problem being the whole package on a J-frame or LCRX just doesn't weigh enough to begin with...
Only bull barrel J made was the 651 .22 Magnum with a 3" barrel...
Take a look at the 60-10/60-15...full underlug .357 would that work if it was a .22? Maybe someone sleeve the barrel and fit it to a 63.... How about one of the older 63 with the 5" barrels...

alukban.... a genuine Model 34 cannot be made more dignified than it is. Requires mean determination on the sights & trigger to make this hummingbird sing. To add a pullman axle on the front end defeats its pocket watch utility, not to mention unique beauty. Bite your hand if it won’t calm down. Then buy a K-frame .22 LR with 4-inch barrel and be done with it. A K-frame .22 is a cream revolver, bit the barrel 4-inch or 6-inch. A K is easier to shoot than a J. The high intrinsic accuracy of the .22 Long Rifle deserves a revolver you shoot well. I hold the M-34 in high esteem, yet know it is not for all hands.
As to fitting a larger frame barrel to a smaller frame double action, remember the distance between chamber and center pin is greater on the larger frame. David Bradshaw

A stainless model 63 was offered with a 5" barrel They are hard to find but awesome revolvers. There is a 5 shot .357 in the same config. Be ready to pay for one but if you were thinking of having a custom built... There are some heavy barrelled 4" M17s out there that are super sweet too. 17-6 I think.

Andrew already has a J-frame that he shoots better than anything else he owns...I should know as he "stole" it from me... Made the mistake of bringing it to his camp the first time we met and he fell in complete lust... Could not take it home with me as I can't stand to see a grown man cry....

I know the Ruger SP101 is not comparable, but if you can find one of the 6-shot models from the original run, they have a nice heft to them.

Bob That 6” barreled I-frame feels like magic in my hands. I am nowhere near being a good shooter but that thing lets me hit a 4” plate at 25y with absolutely boring regularity. I can barely even see the danged 4” plate! I guess I want that gun and its abilities with me pulling the trigger but in a shorter package. It is plenty light in weight but smaller would be the goals.

If you're up for a custom project, why not take something like a heavy barrel Model 64 (IIRC), have the barrel sleeved and either use .38 to .22 adapters or have a new .22 cylinder made. I don't know if you can sleeve a .38 barrel to .22 but it's a thought.

I have a thought in a different direction.
If you like the small, light weight 22's but you would like better shootability for yourself, I question why you think the barrel weight and/or length will make such a difference. I like the weight at the end of the barrel myself and have barrel weights on several 22 autos. However, I liked the feel of those guns without the weights as well. It doesn't sound like you have a shooter that fits your hand yet.
I have to imagine the gun already exists. You just haven't found it. I know you didn't ask for other options, but the 22 Colt Diamondback is about as perfect as it gets for me. The balance is outstanding as is the accuracy. The bluing looks like liquid glass and the fit and finish couldn't be much better. Save your dollars, the snakes aren't cheap; but you get what you pay for is a truism.

I’m going to at least play with very bad paintbrush mock-ups of the thing because it doesn’t cost anything There are a bumper crop of cottontails by me this year. They like to hang out right at the edge of my mowed area which, conveniently, “somebody” mowed to be exactly 25 y radius from my “observation window”. I ALMOST feel guilty about how easy my rabbit diners this fall will be... but not quite!

Not common but can be found is the model 35 S&W. Not a heavy barrel but a longer one . A much easier to shoot J frame. Also , always on the verge of funny looking man sized square butt grips go a LONG way toward making a J frame .22 shootable. Those tiny little round butts are great for carry but a recipe for disaster for accurate shooting. These got put on my raggedy mod 51 and helped ,,,a lot. But , as David B. so poetically stated , The K Frame really is the benchmark to hit. Hmmmmm, maybe a project to "lighten/shrink " a K frame ?

I bet Reeder would make a full underlug barrel for your J-frame.
