They are tearing up the hickory nuts around here, seven from the same tree this morning.

What's your preferred method of cooking squirrel? Fried, jambalaya, dumplings, in that order. Plus, you cant hardly beat just jabbin' a green stick through one and roasting on an open fire.

Squirrel hunting is a lot of fun especially with a handgun! But, I still dont enjoy eating them. Ive tried cooking them several different ways and just dont like their taste. Then again, I still go hunt the little rats.....

August 15th. for me. Favorite type of hunting. I enjoy it even more after deer season. Cold air and less leaves in the tree's. .22LR in Rifle or handgun, .17 Mach 2 in Rifle.

I used to love to go squirrel hunting but got broke from it...two bad experiences.. First was shooting one off a dead tree and when I picked him up about a million of those big yellow hornets came boiling out of the tree...I escaped, but not with my squirrel. The second was I had shot one and was sitting down waiting on the next one and one of those big worms started out of his skin. We called the "wolves"...botflies I guess. Kinda lost my appetite after that.
Just found this...
"The subfamily Cuterebrinae contains important rodent bot flies, such as Cuterebra cuniculi, which infects rabbits, and the tree squirrel bot fly (C. emasculator), which attacks the scrotum of squirrels, sometimes emasculating them."
Disgusting little devils..

Season in Tennessee opened mid September at that time, as I remember. I never heard of them in squirrels, although we had them in cattle. Dad didn't squirrel hunt..he probably didn't know either. Thus was probably around '65.

Good shooting. When my oldest son was in Jr. HS he got one with a rock and a stick.

I have however seen them absolutely covered in fleas this time of year.
