Hi,
I clean my 357 S&W with a cleaning rod from the muzzle.
Can someone recommend a muzzle protector/guide to protect my crown as I glide my rod?
Alternatively, I could buy better rods (currently using aluminum rods), but I think having a protector/guide on the muzzle would do the trick.
Best,
-Adam

I took an old plastic funnel that hand roughly the same diameter spout and just cut the tip off so it would work out to larger calibers. I would first put it on the rod, then put the different brushes on and then just hold it in place as I cleaned. Quick, simple and cheap.

Most gun cleaning supply vendors sell brass muzzle protectors. I have them in my cleaning kit. The plastic funnel idea sound like a good alternative also.

***** Fine Motor Skill. Rest gun on bench, hold muzzle, insert cleaning rod without touching bore. An M1 Garand national Match shot at 600 and 1,000 yards is cleaned this way, often with segmented steel cleaning rod. The deal is to NOT LET ROD CONTACT RIFLING. For pushing cotton flannel patches through a revolver or auto pistol barrel, I prefer a hardwood dowel, with a jag carved on the end. Dowel also makes the best rod for patching revolver chambers. A segmented or take-down rod may not be the most desirable, but it fits in an ammo can, along with a couple of dowel rides cut to fit. I don’t always have a single piece bench rod along David Bradshaw

I use a cut off bottle neck cartridge that gives a reasonable fit to the bore. Cheap and easy!

I have used the little plastic cone section of rocket fireworks, you can pick them up off the ground day after New Years or Fourth of July, then cut the tip off for whatever caliber you want. I like the old case idea though.

I ended up getting the Shooter's Choice Bore Guide from Amazon.
It has more than what I need at this point, but it looks like it has an item that can be used as a plastic muzzle guide. I liked all the ideas for a home made version, but could not find any thing in my place that fit the bill.

Heat shrink on the rod works. Use that for my 10/22's when I don't have a bore snake
