I've got a "few" 41's, Smith and Ruger, more of the latter, but no mdl 58. Saw a 4" no dash in a local shop. Very good price, compared to what I see on GB, etc., but this one has a fair bit of bluing wear. Make that a lot of bluing wear. Bore is clean and shiny. Not sure if it's got too much wiggle in the lockup. I expect that's not enough info, but how low would the price need to be to make this a no-brainer? Under 500? Under 400? Bottom line, I don't need it, have other 4" 41's, I'm just obsessing. But no one here does that...

If it looks like it would shoot at all then anything under $500 is a no brainer.

The 58 is a great gun. I'd check timing, lockup, cyl bbl gap & if it was $500 or so I'd grab it.

The several fewer ounces of metal means that a Model 58 carries more like a smaller-framed sixgun. My duty sixgun, from 1985 to about 1990, was an ex-SAPD-issued Model 58. I carried it on and off the clock, until its lock-up started going bad. I still have it, as a collectable/keepsake. I never got around to having it re-built; N-Frames are a bit too large for my K/L-sized hands, anyway.
I stay away from the auction sites, and only see live samples in a rather high-dollar market, so cannot be helpful in the area of fair pricing.

djw..... the fixed sight M-58 .41 Mag was promoted as a police sidearm, Smith & Wesson leaping way head of Colt in post-war manufacture of adjustable sight sixguns for civilians, not to mention the advance of magnums on all fronts. Promotion of the .41 Mag relied on it huge power advantage over the .38 Special at a supposedly tolerable level off recoil, namely less than the intimidating .44 Mag. The rubber met the road on the police qualification range, with the cop obliged to gather 160 consecutive rounds on target----without flinch. The marriage of cops & .41 Magnum didn’t much survive the honeymoon. Except for various characters with a musician’s interest in performance, persons with a high interest in shooting----persons who would be shooters, whether or not in law enforcement.
Holster wear may be more a signature of carrying the gun than shooting it. A loose holster wears bluing faster than properly fit leather. Periodic leather treatment and cleanliness wear good bluing slowly.
As you infer, “.... wiggle in the lockup” may need definition. The cylinder stop may be worn or loose----without peening of stop notches in cylinder. Peened stop notches may indicate hard use or abuse, or a condition know as THROW-BY, wherein the stop fails to lock the rotating cylinder.
If the cylinder pin hole in the standing breech----the real lockup point of a S&W----is egg-shaped, there will be some lateral movement at the rear of the cylinder.
My intention is not to sound an alarm, just to articulate points of inspection. David Bradshaw

The only 58 I have seen sell recently for under $700 had about 50% bluing gone...it sold for the upper $500s I believe... A decent shooter will bring in the $800 area...
Does it have the original PC Magna grips that are numbered to the gun...they are worth over $100 right there...

I had to give up $800 for my 58. It's a nice gun but it's very obviously reblued. I thought it would be a nice woods carry gun but even with the refinish it's still too nice and too risky to have something happen to it. It's the only 58 I've ever seen in person and I look at a LOT of S&W revolvers. I would really like to find one with some finish wear.

...well...did you get it?? Alas, he who hesitates misses out. I should know better by now. Thanks for all the advice and insight. I go forward better prepared. By the way, they were asking $450, and it was at my local Gander.

$450! PUT THAT NEAR THE TOP OF YOUR LIFETIME SCREW UPS LIST. That's a little harsh. Besides, you have no idea what a slow learner I am. This was just an average screw up.

That’s one I would have a hard time living with. I still think about a $400 model 48 that I had to pass up to get my first ruger SRM. I made the right choice but I haven’t seen a nice 48 that cheap since
