I have ordered dies and shell holder (RCBS), cases (Starline), bullets (Speer 325 JSP), plus a Lee factory crimp die. Midway dropped the Cast Performance 480 bullets, and didn't have any other cast bullets, so who do you suggest for ~350-400gr cast bullet? All of this stuff has been in my 480 Wish-List for over two years! At this time I am thinking of something that will be able to humanely kill a water jug, so plain-base, or is gas-checked needed? Also, I thought I read a Handloader magazine that had 480 loads in it, does anybody remember the month? I have a pile of them, and that may give me an idea of where it could be.
My plan is to set up the turret press with 4 or 5 dies, so as to seat and crimp separately. I will have two different crimping dies the RCBS and the Lee factory crimp, and just see how it goes. What are y'all doing? On the more "energetic" pistol calibers, I seat and crimp in different operations.
On powders I have H-110, 2400, Unique, and even some Trailboss, plus others I can't think of. Along with some other fast-rifle/slow-pistol powders, I think I'm okay in that department.
So throw out your suggested loads, and comment on my approach.
Mobjack. Waiting on my dies and the Big Brown Truck.

Never used Uniquecin the 480, but sure it would work. Haven't used 2400 or H110/296 for years.

Ive shot both my 480s a good bit. I prefer heavier cast (I cast mine) vs. jacketed because of cost. But my 9 1/2” SRH settled in with H110 and a 430gr solid. My Super Blackhawk Bisley seems to shoot best with a 395gr HP and HS-6. Second choice for the SA is the same bullet and 2400. Seems as though the heavier cast bullets need the extra push to group well. This may be a barrel twist issue, I cant say for sure. Longshot did well in the SRH also. Trail Boss is a lot of fun in the 480!!

I'm down to only using 2400 and hs6 in my 480. Imr4227 worked well but I was unhappy with the unburnt powder.
I've found the rcbs crimp to be more than proficient in all my loads with the speer 325 over a nice dose of 2400.
I just started trying the 385gr hp case plainbase and working on a hs6 load for them.

10 gr of Unique behind the 385 gr deep hollow nose pushes it right around 950 fps from my 4.6" SRH. It's a nice easy shooting load. Haven't tried the HS6 loads yet. I did work up a 380 gr load with Accurate #9 with the Accurate Molds 480/380V boolit gas checked. Was getting 1300+ fps with the 7 1/2" barrel . It seems to be a good load but I haven't chronographed it with the shortened barrel yet.

I found Handloader #301 April 2016, there is an article by Brian Pearce on loading for Ruger's five shot 454 & 480. I guess that was the one. What I was thinking about was just a dedicated .480 article. Could there have been a .480 reloading article in Handgunner magazine by John Taffin? Mobjack With a less than perfect remembery.

Thanks for that. I remember it now that you posted a link to it. All I need is my die order to show up. Also, seeing as I do not cast, I need to find a supply of good bullets. My little bit of research, doesn't show too large of a selection for the .475 vs the others like .500 or even .510.

Now on a cast bullet mission.

A play load, a 44spec with another 100grs of bullet. I use 8grs of Trail Boss, CCI350, and the Missouri Bullets 340gr PC'd "Thumper" bullet. It goes 760fps or so thru my 4 5/8" BSBH.

I've used a 340, a 370 & a 385 gr cast in 3 different 480's for taking big game using 4227, 2400 & HS6 mostly. The loads were running anywhere from 950 fps up to 1150 fps. Bison, 2 bull moose & elk. Never tried it on deer.

Anyone know of a plated bullet for the 480 ? I've never seen a Berry''s or Raynier type plated. But the old Speer 400 gr was a plated bullet. I think the Deep Curl is plated.
