I have a new model Single Six with a magnum cylinder. I carry it a lot in the off season when horseback or running the hounds(works great on porcupines). I lost the .22lr cylinder for it and being that it's cheaper to shoot long rifle for fun and plinking I was wondering the downside of shooting lr in the magnum cylinder.
I assume the only issue is that accuracy is compromised but wondering if I was overlooking a safety issue.
Thanks

The 22 Magnum case is considerably larger in diameter than the 22 Long Rifle. I did this once by accident with only poor accuracy as the result. But, I have to vote no on doing it intentionally.

You should be able to buy a new cylinder.

Or, ask on rugerforum.com, or here. Trouble is, a person who packs Long Rifle all the time is more apt to lose the mag cylinder. Rimfire chambers are counterbored to contain the hollow rim, should it burst. To fire .22LR in the .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (.22 WMR) chamber is certain to bulge the Long Rifle case, with possibility of a burst rim. Now, if you have a plentiful supply of Russian .22LR which happens to be oversize for SAAMI chambers, it may work well, and be plenty accurate. I had a case of the Russian stuff, even managed to press a few into my K-22.... the Russian worked great in a 9-shot Harrington & Richardson Model 999 Outdoorsman (or somesuch), greatly improving accuracy from the loose chambers and generous groove diameter. Otherwise, the H&R had no chance of hanging out on the same planet with the S&W K-22. David Bradshaw

That settles it, I am going to need to get a LR cylinder so I can plink at the range. I'll make sure I keep the lr cylinder in my range bag so I don't lose it. If anyone has one for sale, let me know! I'll post a WTB in the lounge as well.
Thanks for all the info, it is much appreciated

The idea of reaming a chamber or two to magnum in a 22lr cylinder is intriguing ! Don’t have to carry the extra cylinder! Since your in the market for a 22lr maybe that’s an idea.

Al Story, Borchardt Rifle company makes and sells after market cylinders for Rugers Single Sixes. He has a website but does not use a computer. You can call and order from him. Have bought a lot of cylinders and other things from him over the years. Some minor fitting may be required as with anything. I have bought several of his cylinders for used guns that I bought with only one cylinder.

Split & bulged brass is often the result of shooting LR ammo in a Mag cylinder. A spare cylinder isn't too expensive,, ($50-$75) and USUALLY all you need to do is make sure of the OAL for it to drop in & work in a Ruger. Buy a spare.
I pick up spare cylinders any time I find them at a fair price because I find guns that are missing the original spare cylinder.

Have you called Ruger? They would have them, but you would probably have to send your gun to have it timed.

I was able to purchase a cylinder from one of the members on this site. Should be here tomorrow. Just in time to do some plinking on Saturday with my son.

Ruger will fit one to your gun if it left the factory as a combination gun. If the owner has one that was strictly a 22 mag or strictly a 22 long rifle, then they would have to go elsewhere. But,for guns that came as combination guns, the extra cylinder can be had from Ruger.
