I have a beautiful second year production DeLuxe with bolt peep that I bought several years ago. It is a deer killing piece of ordinance. The 71 was the finest lever action rifle ever made, an I love an '86. With 200 grain maximum loads the steel BP isn't bad, certainly no worse than my Model 70 in 30-06 with steel BP loaded with 180 grain bullets. Get you a pair of SG swivels and reload for her, your gonna have a ton of fun with it. Best of luck. Tom Black

I’ve owned six original Winchester’s, from first year pre-war long tang to early 50’s production, and two Browning’s. The Browning’s have very snug chamber specs, and proved much more accurate. However, the Winchester’s are certainly minute of deer, and are wonderful. I ordered a set of Dakota sling swivel studs, and had a local smith inlet one into one of the Browning’s butt stock, and he masterfully welded the second one onto the fore end cap to mimic a deluxe model Winchester. Since you are going to the trouble of filling holes and CCH, you might try to locate a pre-war Super Grade sling eye, and a deluxe model forend cap. Otherwise you can do what I did with the Browning.

I wonder if the Pedersoli forend cap for their Model 71 would fit? It is the deluxe version with sling eye and would have to be cheaper than an original (saw one sell for $400!)

It is on he way! I sent it to Tyler Gun Works this morning. Decided to go ahead and have the barrel, mag tube, lever, hammer and loading gate blued with the receiver, butt plate and forend cap case colored after welding up the scope mount holes. I cant wait!

Good find. I have an older 71, well used but not abused. The 71 was a well designed rifle, including the stock. They are a surprisingly lively rifle for being a touch on the heavy side. Very well balanced and handle like a much light rifle, IMHO. I've done a fair amount of load development work with 250 grain bullets and never found the recoil to particularly bad.

Nice find can't wait to see how she turns out. The 71 348 is one of my favorite rifles/cartridges its one of those combos that is just perfect (plenty of power and fast handling) for everything north America has. There kinda expensive but the 200 gr. swift A frames really are great in the 348.

We had one from the middle 50's... It disappeared. I think one of my brothers left it in the barn. My friend said the last time he saw it you couldn't work the lever for the rust. Needless to say, I don't lend them anything and won't be leaving anything behind for them when I check out. Pathetic.
