I see Ruger ARs in 450 and S&W ARs in 458... We all know the proper answer is "BOTH." Perhaps a better question will be which to buy first.

I just had this discussion with myself. I picked .458 SOCOM. Literally put the barrel on the upper last Friday. Still no dies and brass, but I had this .458 upper sitting around. My biggest interest in the round is big bullets trundling along at just under the speed of sound, in short barrel, with a can on the end. To that end: The .458 headspaces on the shoulder, vs the case mouth like the 450 Bushmaster. I felt a little more confident with being able to crimp 450g+ bullets in the SOCOM. The .458 has a little more case capacity. .458 has a better selection of 400g+ bullets. Most .450 Bushmaster barrels are 1:16 or even 1:20 twist. The standard .458 twist is 1:14. It better stabilizes the big subsonic slugs. Tony at Tromix led me to the 12" 1:14 instead of the 10" 1:10 twist for shoooting the 450g plus slugs subsonic.
Buy your barrel and bolt from Tromix & craft your own. Use Lancer magazines.

The Socom will spit bullets out faster than some can take it,.....older 300gr. HP’s. A contract shooter I use for feral hog abatement was using them and they would come apart and provide dramatic results on coyotes and pigs less than 100#, but not much penetration.
His favorite all around use projectile is the Barnes TTSX,.......the Socom is a gas operated 45-70, if you so desire........they do deflate pigs with authority.

Had not thought about that headspacing thing. Always thought the .458 bullet selection would be better. Starline wants a few more bucks for brass for the SOCOM but I'm now thinking that will be first.

What butt stock are we running? I'm thinking the current M4 style might not be the best for this much recoil.

An adjustable gas block would help with recoil and BCG speed.

I will second the recommendation of dealing with Tony at Tromix. I have a 12" pistol and a 16" rifle assembled from Tromix parts, both .458 Socom and no issues with either. I have played with bullets from 300gr to 525gr. Imr 4198 seems to work well for me. A buddy is happy with Lil Gun as his powder of choice. Berry's makes a 350gr plated bullet for low cost plinking loads. I would also recommend getting the Redding dies and a case gauge to help eliminate any variables in the reloading process.
Pistol is running a sig brace, rifle has an Ace skeleton stock. Heavy loads in the rifle are not punishing, but 525's at 1050 in the pistol get my attention pretty well.

Literature is leading me to believe that the 458 runs out of standard 556 magazines. True? False?

True. I guy I work with built one. If I were going to build an AR I would go with the .458

I have had zero issues feeding from unmodified milsurp mags or lancer mags. I have read that Pmags do not work, but have no first hand experience with them.

Socom is the way to go. Lots of bullets to choose from. Put a decent recoil pad on it and have some fun. Mine is on a RRA upper and I have not had any issues.

I put a 458 together, still haven't shot it. Been over a year now. My brother deer hunts with his.

Bought 458 SOCOM dies and shell holder this week... Added a Lee crimp die to the set. Thinking it will fit in the Hornady box with the other dies. Found a rifle with a Rock River upper I can afford. I like RR stuff.. Still need brass. Starline is my friend.

I was going to build a 458 a few years ago but go biggest or go home I built a 50 Beowulf instead. Alexander Arms upper it was nice but I was having major shoulder issues and ended up with 5 hours of surgery so I sold it before a single round was fired. I have been thinking about building another 50 or 458 but might go with 458 to use standard mags I have instead of modifying them or buying proprietary mags.

My 50 Beowulf worked fine with slightly tweaked GI mags. IIRC I just spread the lips a little up front to get the noses up a smidgen higher.
