BLACKBEARS GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO HUNT DANGEROUS GAME, IN THE USA, AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE. KEN: NICE BEARS.

Looks like you use scopes on your handguns. Seems an optic is the way to go for hunting with a handgun. Nice looking bears. Where in Southeast did you hunt ?

Kuiu Island. I also took one the previous year in the Nushagak Hills in Western Alaska, about 30 miles from Taylor Mountain.

I logged all over Kuiu. What bay did you anchor up in ? Lived @ Rowan Bay camp 11 different times :-) When I was packing for Jim Harrower Stone River Lodge we had a spike camp over near the Nushagak. Kinda half way between Whitefish Lake and the Nush.
When I logged and fell timber on Kuiu. It was not uncommon to see 30 black bear a day just driving to and from work. A stainless model 83 is right at home in Southeast.

Ken, have you met Rey? It gives me a headache to have lived so close to him for so long and never have met him. Of course S. Texas is a pretty big place but still..

I've known Rey since 1992. We met at an SCI Sportsmen Against Hunger hunt on the YO, and would also see each other from time to time at SCI conventions. We also both wrote hunting articles regularly for the HHI publication THE SIXGUNNER. Great guy ... I believe he still lives in Brownsville. You guys should meet.

Perhaps you recognize the bay from the rock slide and formations: We took a skiff to land, then walked about 45 minutes inland, then down to a creek, and waded down it for a couple hours, taking a stand from time to time. As I recall, we saw 18 bears while wading down, then back up that stream. This bear squared 7' 2" You're right about stainless guns. I have only used, and would only use a stainless or hard chrome plated gun in Alaska. As to glass, only Leupold for me there. Others can use what they want.

That's Saginaw Bay. Bruce Parker is out of Sitka. He also guides brown bear. I know guys that know him. NICE big black bear ! 7'2" is big ! Biggest black bear I ever saw was on the other side of Rocky Pass on Kuperanof Is. It was over 8' square. I had to look at it several times because due to its size I thot it was a brown bear.

George Faerber..a memory tripped. Was a time I only bow hunted and recall I believe an article in a bow hunting magazine of a bow hunter hiding in an old cabin with a bow and watching a bear trail. He was successful but later found his back up gun, a Ruger 44mag carbine had failed to go into battery and would NOT have fired if needed. I've not been to Alaska, am really enjoying the pics and stories.
