What are your thoughts on Pistol Caliber Leverguns? I find myself wanting a 16" carbine lever in 44 or 45. But every time I try to justify it, I come around to I can have the same performance in something that straps on the hip. And believe me, I can justify a LOT. I understand they can add a bit of velocity and the longer sight radius can help with accuracy/precision. Once I start worrying about adding enough velocity and accuracy to count- I head right into adding a scope. Once I think it's worth scoping, I head toward the 45-70 & 50 AK or the BLR in a bottleneck cartridge. Your thoughts?

If I COuld only HAVE ONE .22 IT WOULD BE A MARLIN 39; ONLY ONE CENTERFIRE? a MARLIN 1894C .357 MAGNUM. I HAVE BEEN SHOOTING PISTOL CALIBER LEVERGUNS SINCE 1956. CURRENTLY HAVE SEVERAL VERSIONS OF EACH CALIBER: .22LR, .22 WMR; .32 MAGNUM, .32-20, .327 FEDERAL, .38 SPECIAL, .357 MAGNUM, .41 MAGNUM, .44 SPECIAL, .44 MAGNUM, .38-40, .44-40, .45 COLT. YES I LIKE 'EM. SOME ARE SCOPED,SOME HAVE FACTORY SIGHTS, OR RECEIVER SIGHTS, OR SKINNER SIGHTS. AND EACH OF THE 14 GRANDKIDS AND 6 GREAT GRANDS (SO FAR) WILL EACH GET SEVERAL.

I'm a .41 Gunner and have three lever guns in .41 as well as a 16.5" TC Contender Carbine...
Besides being able to shoot ones favorite round, the range and powder is way over that of the same round in a handgun. Comparing a 4" barrel to a 20" one is talking 500+- fps difference. Hunting range...50-75 with a iron sighted handgun...150-200 for a rifle...
That and they are just fun....Bob

From a utilitarian/value perspective proposition I see your point as I've not been able to justify the purchase either. To date the sole levergun in the stable is an older, early 70's vintage Marlin in 35 Remington. With modern data it is capable of spitting out a 200gr 35 cal slug at 2100fps. No 35 cal pistol carbine is ever going to come close. All this in a package that can be duplicated for $350-400 today at my LGS - about half the price of a quality pistol cal levergun?
Now if we can cast Mr. Pragmatic to the side for a moment there is no doubt the same in 357 mag would probably be more fun and everyday "fun" is being had in or on sports cars, sailboats, and by other means that cost a whole lot more.

Pistol caliber carbines are a favorite for me, but then I hunt rugged woodland areas where a long shot is 75 yards. The 44 Magnum is impressive out of a 16-20" barrel, gives ammo compatibility with a sidearm, and is light and handy. I also like that loading straight wall pistol cases on a progressive is fast and easy compared to bottleneck rifle rounds. Most levergun stocks are not ideal for scope use. My 94 Trapper 44 wears an XS Sights rear ghost ring and white stripe front. My Ruger Deerfield is properly set up for a scope and wears a Weaver 1x3 (in addition to XS Sights for backup). The Winchester is my stalk hunt/scouting gun (hogs are legal year round) and the Deerfield, while still light and handy for traveling, tends to be more of a stand gun. I love my 44s!

I’ve got a Marlin in 35rem. and it is essentially a mini 4570, with a bit better trajectory. That said, my 44 Marlin, will push the same weight bullet at very similar velocities. and it is accurate enough with a receiver sight to reliably ding an 8” plate at 200 with regularity. I would rather have a 44 or 45 than a 357,......simply because of its usefulness for game large, small and very large. Trapr

I had a Marlin 1895 p with a Lyman receiver sight and a Burris scout scope. I said had as my daughter has killed a boar and bison cow with it. Officially now hers! Great rifle and the 44 mag has killed 200lb boars to 900 pound bison with my cast handloads in her hands!

Have a few in 327 Fed, 41 Mag, 429 GNR and 45 Colt. Really like the guns with the 327 Fed leading the pack.
Just harkens the days of hunters putting meat on the table with the old 32 Rimfires.
Also, have the Marlin 1894s in 218 Bee, 25-20 and 32-20. These are fun and useful little guns that are worth grabbing when you can find them.

My only hitch in the gitalong with revolver cartridge lever carbines is a locale thing. I shoot heavy for caliber high pressure ammo in my 6 shooters . I want to shoot the same ammo in a carbine. The weird ( to me ) slow twist rates of the 44 M and 45 C. barrels just gets me all twisted up. If they came from the factory with the same twist barrels as say a Ruger RH or BH . And able to live with the same SAAMI pressures. I'de already have at least 1 in 45 Colt. A good friend has a Marlin in 357 and shoots 125 gr bullets @ around 2100 fps from it. Mainly for the fireball effect. But he also shoots normal 357 and 38 Sp ammo in it. He really likes the gun.

I've got a Stainless Rossi 92 in 454 with a 20" barrel. It's a little house of fire. 340gr load that is about 1350 in my 4" 454 Redhawk is 1850 from the puma. I've also got a 425gr load thats about 1450ish. I call it my "baby 45/70". I need to go shoot it. It's been a while.

That must be a thumper on both ends, but especially on the shoulder out of a 5 1/2 # rifle. Would be a great bear country tool.

Re: "And believe me, I can justify a LOT."We have 4 pistol caliber leverguns (in 357 and 45Colt) here now (plus a Contender in 357Mag and a 77/357) and they are ALL a hoot to shoot. Do I have other more "appropriate" tools for certain (most other) jobs? Sure, but none are as FUN. I think this post and the posts above should have pretty much thrown down the gauntlet for your Justification requirements. Enjoy your new levergun(s).
