I decided the Astra Police needed a new set of grips fit to my hand. I had a 100-year-old plank of pre-blight American Chestnut that I thought would be just the thing. I had to stabilize some cracks, but when you are using an ancient material from a virtually extinct species, well, beggars can't be choosers. The grips are long front-to-back, but are actually quite flat, so if I decide to CC this gun they won't be in the way. Very comfortable grip- looking forward to trying them on the nextrange trip. I think these Spanish revolvers are seriously underestimated here in the US. Fit and Finish is excellent and the gun has a number of innovative features, like the user-adjustable trigger-pull, the quick-release cylinder etc. The gun is quite stout, and while it is a .38 Special the only difference (in terms of materials and construction) is the depth of the chambers. Several people have bought these cheap, reamed the chambers for .357 and shot the hell out of them without issues.

Those are some nice looking grips ! Cool that you had some very unique wood to make them from . In the late 70 S and early 80s I new several guys that had Astra revolvers. They always seemed to work . Don't remember ever hearing of a problem with them.

The "POLICE " model is scarce enough nobody gets it. Its not the normal Astra. Made to a very high level for international military and police sales it's not very common. Reputedly equipped with a crane and cylinder for easy swap to 9mm to service a larger amount of the world needs. But these are never found . I had one barrel marked 357 so they are definitely strong enough for it. Can't tell from the picture but they are N frame sized so functionally similar to the old S&W 38/44 heavy duty. Fixed sight, shrouded ejector and all. Truly a beast , this ain't no model 10 38spl.

There are quite a few of these police trade-ins on the market right now, usually for less then $250. As mentioned grips can be an issue as there don't seem to be any after-market grips specific to these revolvers. They are definitely worth the price of custom grips, though!
