Very nice levergun cowpuncher! I had the privilege of putting a few rounds through one in 500 S&w at the John Linebaugh shoot a couple years back. If yours is anywhere near as accurate as the one I fired was, you should have no trouble putting your tag on a wapati! I also am a huge fan of lever actions. Hope to add a Big Horn Armory to my collection one day.

I have shot the 500linebaugh. And a couple different 500 sw. The 500L is sure effective on small spinner targets! And it’s good for getting the shooter yelled at when the spinner targets were built for 38 special!

So I guess this is the best place to ask this. Are the 460 and 500 S&W rifles really built to take a steady diet of SAAMI pressure ammo ? How many rounds will the rifles last ?

Reeder Is building 500 smith on marlin 1895’s. Folks say that that’s a no-no, too much pressure for that platform. Give him a shout to see how many rounds his test rifle has through it. I have a Reeder 1895 50 ak lower pressure and a hoot to shoot! Trail boss is your friend at the range!

The marlin is not going to hold up. I tried. My rifle will hold up to thousands of rounds at 60k psi. Ive tried it.

A buddy of mine here in AK just got one in 500 Smith. He really likes it and says it's a heck of a shooter with some boolits I casted for him. Lee 440ish gr.

I guess the difference between 60 and 65k psi is significant in that action? Disclaimer: I know very little about lever guns or the differences in actions and makers.

I kinda know the results of strong loading the 1895 Marlin. Not good. I know dozens of people that have and do pack the Guide Gun. Almost all of them use 45/70 but some the 450 Marlin. Including Wild West Guns 457s. Almost all of them have had 1 of 3 different problems with their rifles. All 3 of those problems create a stoppage of function. Meaning , they get 1 round off, then the action won't open, or they get a round off and the action opens then the lever is stuck in the open position. Those 2 are the most common. Then with some 1895s all the sudden the hammer won't cock. All of these problems require a gunsmith to take the gun apart to fix the problem. I had 1 in 45/70 for a few months Iirc. The action would buck itself open when fireing top 45/70 book loads for the Marlin with 400 and 460 gr cast boolits. I've come to the strong conclusion that a Marlin 1895 is definitely NOT just a slightly smaller 458. When pressures are kept low enough. They are great. And do about as good a job at killing brown bear as a 454 Revolver.
The Big Horn Armory is interesting as it seems to be designed around seriously high pressure cartridges.

The action is considerably larger than that of a Marlin.
